I have pico panniers and love em! Been totally impossible to kill for 2+ years of pretty hard use

The main pockets are just big enough to hold my entire sleep system minus pad (small quilt, bivy, pillow, tarp, stakes) plus sleep clothes, and the outer pockets are very convenient for access off the bike without having to unpack/repack a whole bunch of shit in your main bags

The only downside is that the acrylic mounting plate (an ingenious system tbh) is kinda heavy, and you probably want to chamfer the edges a bit to reduce abrasion on the bag where the corner hits it, I noticed some definite early wear on the bag before I did this. The ortliebs honestly look pretty good too though, way better than most voile-strap-a-bag-to-a-shitty-cage type options

the other option that I’m curious about are the Atwater Atelier Cage Mages which seem like they could be an improvement- mount to standard 3-pack cages, bit lighter for the whole system, and a bit more storage space, but I’ve no experience with 'em

I imagine the Tange steel weighs much less than the 4130 the Surly is made of.

When I was building up my NFE I asked the shop to install a 113mm. I had a hard time setting the pusher to get into the big ring on a compact double (the cable felt REALLY TIGHT), but I just figured it was because I was new to shakes. A year later I took the bike apart and found they’d given me a 118. I’m guessing that on a friction shifters I wouldn’t notice.

i believe one of the big names in gravel is accused of ā€œattacking in the feed zoneā€ at sbt grvl.

the ā€œspirit of gravelā€ is a loosely used term to encompass unwritten rules in racing that are often not defined, just like, inherently rude thing to do, e.g. attack in the feed zone.

i haven’t see any of the memes though so not sure if this is helpful context.

Chasing group at SBTGrvl was down like 8 minutes and Stetina (maybe others) wanted to stop at the feedzone and roll the rest of the day as the second racing group. Swenson wanted to catch the lead group and had the foresight to carry enough water to skip that station so he and others went through. Stetina got offended by this, lots of back and forth on IG and now Stetina has written something on Velonews to clarify but it’s behind the paywall. Swenson won the race, Stetina was somewhere top 25?

I think Stetina is being a gomer, nobody ever expected everyone to stop at every aid station ffs. ā€œCamaraderieā€ for gravel pros seems to be a mystery equivocation where if they win by using tactics and racecraft/gamesmanship he’s a very smart and strong rider - if someone else wins by same? Well that’s a violation of make believe unwritten rules in a sport most weren’t competing in even 3 years ago.

I rolled in, was as efficient as possible, and readied to catch back up. Only once I had a clear view, the 15 or so that didn’t stop were far up the road. There was an injection in the pace, a conscious acceleration. I was honestly flabbergasted.

The front group continued to pull away and they were going fast enough that riders were being dropped from their group. This was definitely faster than before we’d entered the feed zone and these riders had taken advantage of the purposeful stop by others to create the gap.

In my mind, that was unsportsmanlike.
