I have a 135/142 Jones-compatible front wheel if you’re interested. 29" with i35 WTB rim.
Let me get the fork in and figure things out and I’ll definitely hit you up! Thanks man.
for 100x12 dynamos, son > shimano > SP, right?
Atmo
I think SP is closer to SON in rolling resistance than Shimano is, but most likely to fail catastrophically, so I think your ranking is fair.
But Shimano also may have gotten better w.r.t. rolling resistance since I last paid attention to it.
I think it’s SON > SP > Shimano, or at least it was when I bought into dynohubs.
charts and such here (from 2017)
I have a SONDeluxe wide body on my road bike and Shimano on my commuter. I couldn’t tell you the difference in terms of resistance but it’s apples to oranges because my commuter weighs like 40 gd pounds ![]()
I like the SON wide body for the wide flange spacing. The Shimano is very plug-and-play. no crimping/soldering necessary
I just bought a sondelux 12x100 and have a pair of sp and a pair of shimanos. They largely sit unused because I’m a sedentary slob and am too depressed to do anything except eat and vegetate on the couch
i remember some SP being less reliable. i think that was 15x100.
@EndpointBraden was that you with those facts?
All the SP failures I have heard of where from you all. I’ve sold a mess of SP and Shimano and a handful of SON. Never had one come back that I can recall. SON is still the gold standard but SP had been good. Especially if you want lower spoke counts.
Basically it
Also SP comes in spoke counts in silver and colors
My sp has been good for a year of daily commuting. I am neither little nor easy on bike parts
yeah, SP will start to get a little noisy and draggy after years of use, but that’s not really a problem, just a fact of life
My SP had been in service for about 5 years of nearly daily use and fished PBP and some rainy 400 when I loaned it out. So there’s that.
apparently the lego slips right over the son connectors anyway.
maybe the sp issues are an echo chamber thing here.
where in NY are you?
darn. i’m up in binghamton and all tarckers* are pretty far away
My 15 x 100 SP didn’t fail, it just felt very draggy from the very beginning and never improved. Had I not had another bike with a Shimano that felt much less draggy I probably would have assumed that was normal and fine.
#1: Favorite method for removing a stripped square taper crank bolt? If I can get it out of the way I can thread in my removal tool.
#2: new bike for the SO steers funny. It feels like it slightly pulls to the outside of a turn in both directions. Feels similar to an over-tight headset. Headset appears to be tensioned correctly, no play and if I pick it up by the rear end and let go of the bars they swing back and forth 1-2 times. Feels smooth on rotation and bike in general has probably only a few hundred miles on it (bought used). Front tire is properly inflated and TA is tight without play in the hub.
My Shimano feels way more draggy than my SP. Just got another SP because I needed low spoke count and 15x100 and centerlock. Hoping it lasts for as many thousands of miles as the old SP (in a wheel that @EndpointBraden built) that I have many thousands of miles on. Once this new wheelset is built, I think the old one will probably be for sale for cheep.
- like the threads are stripped or the allen socket is blown out?
- tires? and or tires to big for the rim?
