There does not appear to be a ding around the end of the steerer

Maybe someone tightened a quill stem too tight and the dent

Throw the whole bike in the co op donation bin and start over with a threadless setup. At least the fork

This is the only real answer.

“Donate” a bike that could cause serious bodily harm to an unsuspecting buyer? Or you just think it’s fine but the bike sux?

The people at the co-op will look it over. If you put a tag on the fork saying that the steerer is ovalized, they’ll know to just heave-ho it into the trash or pass it on to someone who needs a fork for a tallbike.

donate everything but the fork. destroy the fork.

Well, throw out the garbage parts.

Starting to assemble the bits for an O/S travel frame:

Silver flows really easily compared to brass; it started wicking into the joint as soon as it got up to a dull glow, and from peering into the inside of the joint it looks like it managed to successfully flow all the way through the lugs.

Finally started doing some practice on scrap today. Second time I’ve ever picked up a torch
Now to just do this a million more times.

I might have a chance to take a TIG framebuilding class essentially for just the price of materials – should I do it and build the 650b trackdonneur of my dreams???

Yes. Making your own frame is the most economical way of getting your weird frame ideas out on the road.

I’d need to figure out what to do about the fork though! Maybe design around the soma low-trail (cheap and quick option), hunter-gatherer fork (if it gets back in stock), or modifying an existing fork for more offset + brazing on rack tabs.

If you are building bike number one, my suggestion would be to not go crazy on the design. There is already a bunch of stuff you’ll be trying to deal with. Go for something relatively straight forward.

And don’t expect it to be your forever™ bike (even if you do go wild with the design) because any build flaws will likely leap up and greet you before forever rolls around.

..

Was that with flux coated rod?

Yeah, I know that’s not ideal but I had a couple rods left so I figured I’d use them up while I learn the basics of torch and heat control.
