Gear Recommendations (old)

I’ve got the roadie ones and, though a bit small, they are pretty great.
I was contemplating bootleg ones or otherwise moped ones on amazon for about $15 if I get flatbar setup. I mean, can you get less dorky looking anyway?

Ghetto ones have been giving me none of it lately. Saw a dude today that looked like he was delivering pizzas until I got close enough to see the space blanket tied to his bars.

I’ve been using the $15 ATV mitts from Amazon. They work okay, but I think they don’t hold their shape as well as the brand name Bar Mitts. I was thinking about getting some nicer ones until it looked like we were moving south.

The desert gets cold and it feels oh so much worse after 8 months of being so hot you can’t be outside.
Barmits =/= fenders, for real they take 10 seconds to take off/put on. I commute with them in the morning and take them off for the ride home. I also had them on for my entire tour in Iceland. Fuck 50 and raining my hands were happy.

this is not a gear recommendation, just a psa to say that barmits kick ass.
This so much. FFS it took me pretty much no seconds to move them from grinder to sasquoss this morning before ride in. It’s not like you can’t change up what gloves are on underneath either. It’s more article of clothing than bike accessory.

Cosigning on barmitts. Top notch product for sure. So much warmer than any $80msrp glove money can buy, any shitty cheap glove works under em til the mid-low teens and you have mad dexterity for those short moments where it counts. A-plus product. Would buy again

Hey dorks, I just wanted to know if you guys liked the wool De Feet better than the Ibex.

Fuck this Bar Mitts chat.

both nice. I have ibex because I think they come further up the wrist.
might have been $5 less at the time. I don’t remember

Just ordered a bunch of banded ear plugs for work. I don’t need or want ear protection all the time so the banded plugs are great for wearing around my neck until I need them and not being in the way. Anyone have ones they like that don’t break in 2 days like the ones I got from whistle work wear last week?

set yourself free:

1 hate wearing ear muffs over glasses. 2 radio isnt allowed. Back to ear plugs please.

I’ve found that a $5 set of earbuds will last longer than a $5 set of earplugs. Maybe see if you can get away with it by cutting the cord off just past the loop or something.

Get those ones with the 3 molded rubber rings instead of the foam. I had a pair for when I worked in stamping that were bomb. Not sure about brand names though :frowning:

good thread for this?

saw this new clothing brand: http://westernrise.com
proprietary Ultra DryRise fabric—designed to keep water off your skin and out of your clothes—repels water, wicks sweat, resists microbials and blocks the sun.
lower price point than outlier; less biz caz styling. not sure about quality / performance.

I ordered a shirt from them, will report back on it. The pants looks to baggy for my taste though.

Im gonna buy a new backpack soon. Pretty much settled in the Osprey Aether 70. Needs to be good for weight up to about 70lbs (thats past the aether’s recommended load but im willing to push that heat form belt more than I would like to go up to a big ol xenith. Im asking though if there is another brand/pack that is like a secret or something that is good in the $300 range. Or you could just tell me that I did my homework and the Aether is the shit.

I have an osprey, like it a lot. Don’t think it will let you down.

70 pounds?! you better be going on some serious winter mountaineering trips or like 2 weeks without resupply or something.

when i bought my aether, you could swap out the hipbelt for one from the crescent (more beefy, better weight transfer, etc.). that was 6 or 7 years ago or sommat and not sure if the crescent is made anymore or if there are still options for hipbelt interchangeability. i pack pretty ul these days but i still have my trusty aether 70.

I just did a 2 day trip this friday and was at 55 (at least 20 of that was water cuz AZ). Admittedly I could have shed a lot of base weight in that (a big book, some wine, packing too much food ect…) but I dont think it is unreasonable to think I could get to 70lbs for a week long trip, especially in arizona where it is not uncommon to need 8+ liters of water between sources.

Doing 9 days in Chile in march and I expect to start the hike at at least 65…

50+ lbs is pretty monstrous, let alone 70. I guess one should look at net weights before food and water… 30-40 lbs net pack weight is pretty crazy if you ask me.

BTW… you need 10 liters of water for two days? Is it 100F+ and no water sources along the way whatsoever either day?
