Get a cheap burner phone and don’t bother to activate it. Add a big SD card for offline base maps or topos or whatever.

Ooo, I’ve always wanted a burner phone.

Me too.

Any particular suggestions for hardware that works well in this application?

The main things to look for would be that it has an SD card slot, it’s not so bottom-of-the-barrel that you can’t get a waterproof case for it, and that you know what the key sequence to skip activation is.

What is good for cycling rain jackets these days?
I’m in denial that I need a replacement because I hate wearing a rain jacket in general and look for every excuse to keep it in the bag.
My Novara eVent jacket zipper finally shit the bed. I’m not sure if I want to go back to pit-zips or stick with the semi-breathable eVent material.
What is good these days? Any brands to avoid?

Preferences: slim-fit, dual zipper so I can unzip the bottom to prevent tummy bunching, orange or blue in color, does not need any pockets, packability is a priority.

Worth having repaired?

I don’t really think so since the eVent fabric hasn’t really been very waterproof lately (even after washing which is apparently how you bring back the waterproof qualities). Most of the reflective piping has also flaked off so it might be ending its lifespan.
I also wonder if the cost would be astronomical, I once contacted Rainypass to see how much they were charging to clean and reapply waterproofing to a jacket and it was a pretty hefty chunk of change relative to the price of the jacket.

We actually received a package addressed to Rainypass last week, apparently they have the same address number but a few blocks over on Stone Way, glad I didn’t immediately open it.

you couldn’t of chosen a better time to purchase a rain jacket. rapha has a sale both in-store and online, excelsports in colorado is also discounting their winter clothing. depending on your location, you could potentially benefit from not having to pay tax and shipping costs, yay!

I have the showers pass spring classic and it has been superb so far. Good ventilation when needed, doesn’t make me as sweaty as my old pearl izumi shell, material isn’t too flappy in the wind, and the cut is really nice (except off the bike with a dress shirt on underneath, then it just looks silly)

Honestly, I’ve just been using a pata houdini + wool as rain wear, even though it’s only billed as a ‘windshirt’ it beads water really wells, breathes, and is the most packable ever.

P sure you are supposed to spray w/ dwr coating every few washings. Also p sure you can do this at home. Never have personally though so maybe that’s not true

My marmot could use a spray down. It keeps me dry still but doesn’t bead like it did when new. I blame all of this on having to wash it a bunch.

oh, u rite. How to care for eVent fabrics products | eVent Fabrics
I swear I was doing some internet research a year ago and read something about only laundering was necessary, recommended no waterproof treatment. Ooops

Thanks for the recommendations, looking at them now

i like my gore oxygen jacket but it’s like… really slim fit.

it still keeps me dry after 3 years despite desperately needing a DWR revitalization. the water no longer beads when it’s raining more than a drizzle so the outer layer soaks up water, but the inside stays dry and relatively cool as far as jackets go.

I am looking for some inexpensive windproof leggings I can use on a daily basis for shorter rides

are the uniqlo heattech stuff good as baselayer?

Not cheap but worth it… I carefully cut the chamois out of these and throw them over whatever bibs when it gets into the 20s.

These popped up randomly on ebay. So ugly, but so cheap.
