Gear Recommendations (old)

iirc it doesn’t fit, at least if your basket is living near the height of your shakes. I’ll check later tonight
any size is right, I like the 137 but some friends have the 139

get the black one with the adjustable legs, which also makes the handlebar clamps removable
Fred how is yours attached to your HC rack on the NFE? Anything more secure than zipties?

ziptied wald rack is pretty damn secure atmo

the rack will bend before that ziptie breaks

Not exactly a wald but my Cycletruck has fallen over a couple times and busted 80% of the zip ties open.
The plastic foldable crate hits the ground before the rack & bike when it tips sideways and the zip-ties are not exactly in the optimal position (used existing vent/water holes). YMMV

One of these days I have dreams of replacing the zip-ties with 4 bolts, washers & wingnuts for easy removal/attachment.
old crate

new crate:

Which foldable basket are you using? Colin just built The Bikery a cycle truck, so now the fun part of building it up begins.

I can check to see if there was a name when I get home. I seem to recall it being nondescript.
My old roommate worked at the Whole Foods distribution center in SODO and snatched it from there as a gift since I was complaining about my Amazon purchased crate being too small for the platform (I swear I went to 10 grocery stores but they all seemed to carry the cube 4x gallon crates).

I wonder if you could go down to the Whole Foods distro and ask for one? Unfortunately/fourtunately said roommate is now professional dag walker

Mine is done this way, the kindergarten teacher basket has integrated reinforced bolt holes at the corners, and we made the rack smaller to fit it exactly: http://www.armadaart.com/crates.htm

This means that when it hits the ground, the plastic explodes at the corners — I’ve replaced it twice

I added M5 thru bosses to the inside of the rail on my prototype after a year, just before getting it powdercoated

Initially that was for an experiment with “Lift The Dot” studs underneath the platform, but they were also intended for fucking around with bolting a basket from above with big fender washers, something I only just got around to.

That rack looks totally different than my HC rack.

ferg:

I can say with near certainty that that is probably not what he’s looking for. That pack is great as long as you want a stuff sack with straps. It is very different than an osprey with some structure, and for longer days out there structure is more likely what ferg is looking for.

Edit: I have that pack, it’s decent in a pinch, but I much prefer my daypacks with more structure and padding.

What’s the original request? I love that pack, though not for every use.

Running/day hiking

Would not flash 18 for running

I picked up a few of these baskets in a free pile a while ago, I’ll see if I still have them

Running with any hydration pack kinda sucks.
The least shitty ones are the small super tight fitting ones that are not ideal for anything but running. Nathan makes some good ones.

A day pack is a day pack is a day pack. Get something with a frame and a waist belt that is more than a 1inch nylon strap. Osprey has an unlimited warranty which is great. They are replacing the brain on my backpack even though all the damage was 100% my fault.

Flash 18 is rad. Ive used it on tours and extended backpacking trips for dayhikes and water runs.

the osprey warranty is cool. I was told I could be in like kazhakstan and they would still try and help me out
dunno how they could very much but neat

osprey packs are dope. super well thought out.

what’s good in impact hardening qbp bro-able knee protection? smashed my knee into a rock a week ago and still can hardly ride. time to be an old man and accept the inevitable.

yeah different construction techniques

I designed my frameset with the fork longer longer than necessary so that the rack could come straight across like that from the top of the crown with ideal clearance

it’s also 10.5" square with a 10deg bend on the leading and trailing sides of the perimeter, where the production rack is 10x12"

it’s the perfect backpack for a clever cyclist

crumples up to stow in a larger bag, and stuffed it’s the ideal size for a Wald
