get me into winter cycling

Maybe some snow this weekend. We’ll see. Pretty cold commute this morning by Seattle standards. I bypassed what I knew were likely to be the icy sections though. Toes are still thawing out.

i completely layed out on a bunch of ice the other day. managed to not hurt myself.

I put on my schwaalbe marathon winter 35c 240 stud tires on yesterday, can’t say enough good things about these tires. They grip really well in compacted snow/ice and roll better than the crappy kenda k-180 38’s that were on there previously.

dat sound of a dry snow squeaking underneath my tires…

Well it is a 30* bluebird day with six inches of snow! I’m puggin the beach later.

regular ol’ marathons have long been my winter base training go-to/heavy as shit/never flats/doesn’t afraid of descending steep wet winding roads tire.

love

5* and clear this morning.

That little glowing 1 in the background is representative of the temperature, relatively speaking, noted in the preferred American scale.

Related: Fuck it’s cold!

we had freezing rain the night before last, yesterday on my way into class i wiped out twice while cornering.
what’s up schwalbe snow studded tires? you all bark and no bite? you make a lot of noise when i ride.
one thing i will say is that they are excellent in snow, and they’ve been fine on ice up until yesterday.

well, the shit rain has made it to portland, at least this morning. last night was chilly but dry, this morning i was soaked by time i made it to work.

It finally snowed here. Riding today was nice and slippery, but better than the studded tires on wet pavement I’ve been dealing with lately.

This. I had it for my commute in yesterday morning, then shit got all slushy and sloppy. Would pug again, though.

Gore overshoes for freezing toes?

It’s dropped to -10C here and the rest of my feet are fine in Dominators, but I almost lose my toes on 30 minute rides. Will overshoes do little to help? Winter shoes (recommendations?) look like they could improve the situation, but they’re not cheap and if overshoes would make the same improvement, I’d go the cheaper route.

I got overshoes this winter and they’ve been full of win. Last year my toes was froze, it’s not as cold this year, but my toes are toasty.

winter was canceled this year for ohio.

Just get some waterproofish shoe covers bex, much more versatile than just some thermo shits

For serious. Sucks it’s still too sloppy for mtb though.

Talk to me about spending $200 on some “winter” SPD mountain compatible shoes.

Not really winter shoes, but more waterproof shoes that I will wear 9 months out of the year here in Seattle. Don’t necessarily need tons of insulation, just waterproofness. I’ve had issues in the past with very cold toes, both from wet and from vents in the toebox. Have also had problems with the cold cleat/pedal creating a very cold almost-frostbitten spot on the sole of my feet.

I’ve got options for booties or street shoes and flats, not interested in rehashing those at this point.

Sidi Diablo GTX
Pearl Izumi x-Alp seek WRX

Northwave Celcius GTX
Mavic? Shimano? Louis Garneau? Alpinstars?

If any of y’all have tried these and found them to suck, please let me know before I waste some money.
