Handlebar Bags

What about multiple smaller bags? If you aren’t packing any one large item you could use a larger (Ortlieb or Blix) style saddle bag, maybe a frame bag, and/or a small bar bag.

Those ortlieb ones are so incredible, I think for my next tour I’m going to try and reformat and get one. Ortlieb rollers/handlebar bag in front and then a large-ish backpack like one of those freight roll tops on a light rear rack.
I’ve got plans and aspirations motherfuckers.

The more I’m thinking about doing 30mph+ descents with a bar bag, the more I’m thinking I don’t think so. So, I ordered a Tubus fly. Probably, I’ll put an Arkel Tail Rider on it… or something. Just call me, “Fred”.

that sounds like a terrible idea frank. you don’t want that weight on your back, you want it on your front wheels.

I’m thinking I want the weight lower and I can’t do that on the front. Also, don’t call me Frank.

I’m feeling sassy.

The bike originally looked like this:

It’s evolved a great deal since then. Essentially it’s Reynolds 631, reasonably light, compact geo, and floppy as hell if you’re 100 kilos. It was designed by Sky Jaeger right here in Bianchi USA’s Hayward, CA offices.

i dig it britt

Sweet necro, brah

get me into cheap, classy bike bags

Excuse me for pimping my sub $20 nashbar rack and bike co-op bag combo one more time:

The bag is a green nylon jobby that says “Countryman” on it. All the zipper pull tabs are made out of complete crap; the ones that I use often have all broken and been replaced with little nylon ribbons. In this picture it’s secured to the bar’s curves with velcro straps and also tied down to the rack with small shoelaces. Since then I have ditched the velcro. It’s definitely floppy when nothing is in the bag, but still the bag seems to hang on to the rack just fine, and I have put it through a ton of commuting and long distance riding. With stuff in the bag it sort of becomes self supporting. I keep contemplating adding a VO decaleur to help hold the bag up when nothing is in it, but both weightweenie and cheapweenie considerations weigh against this.

Wheel flop when parking the bike is a minor annoyance but certainly not enough to make me want to shell out for a low trail frame. The crosscheck’s geometry is stable enough that it has never shimmied or done other unpleasant things at speed.

Big seat bags?

I’ve been running the Acorn Rando Bag for several months now and love it. I HIGHLY suggest it.

Needs rack tho.

(I tried to buy an Acorn but they won’t ship to Canada. Dude told me it wouldn’t be fair to all the Americans who want one.)

Seconded. Could be a 1" deeper and longer to cover a Nitto front rack, but no complaints otherwise. The mounting system is nice; not sure if I’d prefer a decaleur, but probably not.

What BS though, that Americans only policy 'cause foreigners getting stuff is unfair.

I think Bethoud is a pretty cool guy. Eh’s got lots of pockets and doesn’t afraid of anything.

For serious: If your current bike is feeling sketchy with a front load, it’s probably more of a geometry thing than anything else. If you can get a rack on the front and get the bag low enough (hard to do with many modern forks) then I think that can help, otherwise I think your plan of going with either a saddlebag or trunk is a good one. It does get old, however, to have to stop to get things in/out while you’re riding.

My solution for you Mr. Mr.: get a Pelican :bear:
