(I tried to buy an Acorn but they won’t ship to Canada. Dude told me it wouldn’t be fair to all the Americans who want one.)
Where do you live ryker? Out here in van we have some great shipping agencies right across the border, like TSB in point robertts, that will basically function as your american address for a small fee. You ship there, then pop across the border to pick it up. It works really well for defeating long shipping times, high brokerage/ whatever mafia fees and other cross border bullshit.

Hey Surf, how are you liking your pelican these days? i know there was sum bullshit with frame prep or alignment but after that was sorted out did you ever post a detailed review or anything? I’m casting around for my next frame and since handlebar bags rule so much am thinking about getting into low trail.
No, I haven’t yet. Still sort of dialing everything in. Switched to aero levers and that made a huge difference, also going to switch to Noodles (they’re supposed to be in any day now so hopefully soon). I need to get fitness back after my long summer layoff from (distance) riding, but in any event I did take the Pelican for a very nice ride this morning and here are some thoughts on how it rides, and general impressions:

Really rails corners nicely, better than any bike I’ve had so far. I don’t know how much of this is geometry versus weight distribution, but it feels great. This is one of the most notable things about the Pelican and you notice it regardless of whether you’re making a sharp turn around a corner in the city or carving down a big descent in the hills. It may be the thing I most like about how the bike rides.

The low trail / long wheelbase collabo is interesting, and for the most part good although the handling is definitely more “neutral” than the Cross-Check’s decidedly “stable” feel. By this I mean that it will instantly start turning - in a gradual and totally not twitchy way - to whatever input you give it, whereas the Cross-Check would more plug along and you had to really steer it into things more (also not in a bad way at all). But the wheelbase is long enough that it never feels squirrely, mostly you just have to have a quiet upper body when reaching down for a bottle (for example) or you might find yourself veering a bit unexpectedly. This is surely something I’ll adjust to as I’ve got more time on the bike, and just more riding time again in general, and the much wider Noodle handlebars (I am going with 46cm) may help slow down the feeling of the steering somewhat. I want to emphasize that it is NOT twitchy or squirrely, or in any way a bad handling bike. It is responsive, but that responsiveness is significantly tempered by the long wheelbase, and it’s very predictable once you realize that it’s going to go wherever you tell it… it’s listening very closely to your instructions.

The ride is plush. It’s important to note that I have the exact same wheelset, tires and drivetrain on this as I had on the Cross-Check, and will soon have bars / levers the same width & setup as before, so I really do feel like this is as close to an apples-to-apples comparo as I can give. The bike just goes over rough stuff really nicely. This is to a large part due to the 700x35 tires (I run 'em at 70psi front / 75psi rear) but also I think the low trail fork absorbs more bumps, thanks to its curve, and the frame overall just has a nice feel to it (it’s standard diameter tubing vs oversize on the CC).

Regarding front loads - the bike rides exactly the same whether I’ve got no weight up front, or a full load in the Berthoud (say 10lbs or so). I really can’t tell the difference in terms of handling, and have not had any shimmy yet of any kind when riding no hands. There is a fair amount of flop when you are parking the bike or hand-walking it, and it’s a little annoying, but I think there’s really no way around that and who cares anyways, bikes are made for riding.

Having weight in the handlebar bag is WAY better than having it in a saddlebag. With the Carradice on the Cross-Check I found out-of-the-saddle climbing to be pretty annoying, but with the Berthoud on the Pelican it’s pretty much a non-issue… you just don’t notice it much if at all. I have found that the Nitto Randonneurs I’m running are just too narrow for me to really feel comfortable climbing out of the saddle, but once I put the Noodles on I expect it’s going to feel great.

I got ample opportunity on last weekend’s metric century to see how the bike dealt with wind. I could definitely feel the extra effort of pushing my 28-size (largest) Berthoud through a headwind and that pretty much sucked, but in terms of handling, the wind did not seem to negatively effect the bike at all, or at least no more than any other bike. I had every type of wind direction, from head to quartering to side to trailing and tail and it was fine no matter what.

At ~220lbs I’m definitely heavy enough to cause the frame to flex but ghost shifting hasn’t been too much of an issue (less so than on the Cross-Check, but it may be that I have a lower friction cable guide on the BB shell or just got it setup better this time around).

The powdercoat is holding up very nicely so far. I think I am pretty middle-of-the-road with my bikes, I don’t baby them but at the same time I’m mindful of trying not to damage them needlessly. So far it’s been holding up great.
Overall still very happy with the bike and am planning to have it for a long time. It’s exactly what I want in a road bike and has enough open-endedness built into the design (horizontal drops, plenty of clearance, lots of braze-ons) that I feel it really is sort of a low-trail version of the versatility represented by the Cross-Check. I wish it wasn’t so expensive but it’s still one of the least costly true low trail designs out there.
I have the 62cm Pelican, which has a 60cm top tube. I rode a 60cm Cross-Check which also has a 60cm top tube.
Mander, how well does your CC work with the front load? Meaning, is handling really impacted that much, and can you add/remove layers (like your raincoat) while riding no hands?
On my CC, I could ride that thing no handed forever and a day, sliding my messenger bag around and taking things out, or whatever. I never ran it with a handlebar bag, though, so it’s possible I wouldn’t have liked it, but subsequently Surly has added the lowrider braze-ons to the CC fork and I have certainly seen plenty of them setup for touring with lots of weight on the front. I can’t imagine carrying 5-10lbs down low in a rack-mounted handlebar bag could be that bad?
I mean, there are other attributes to the Pelican frame & fork that I really like besides the low trail thing, and I’m very happy with it, but because they do make it in the US as opposed to Taiwan, it does cost a lot more. For me, it was worth it, as I’m convinced I have a frameset I’ll keep for quite a long time, but it’s too bad there isn’t a nice Taiwanese-made alternative. I was hoping the new Casseroll was going to be lower trail, but despite the cool integrated front rack, the geometry is pretty standard. The Raleigh Port Townsend has pretty low-ish trail for a mainstream bike and seems pretty cool, comes with fenders and a front rack.
Hahah that sucks I asked about vertical dropouts and Gabe wasn’t having any of it. Wire guides on fork would be nice too. Don’t care too much about the pump peg (mine fits nice in the handlebar bag’s front pocket) and dunno about 5mm less BB drop, it would seem like less BB drop would be better for a SS or FG configuration but the vertical drops is going the opposite direction from that. Maybe for agility on the mixed terrain.
bb drop is now 75mm from 70mm before. I’m guessing because it’s no longer fixed-gear friendly with the new vertical drop outs, it doesnt need to be so high up to avoid pedal strike…so the bb drop can be increased a bit. something like that. how this effects the ride and fit, I have no idea. maybe someone smarter can chime in.
I know this info because my roommate is stalking this frame and might buy one. either the pelican or the boulder bicycle frameset.
Ah, ok so they increased BB drop… that makes sense w/the vertical dropouts, now
Boulder Bikes look really nice too, if you don’t mind a sloping top tube. At 6’3" I have yet to ride a bike where standover was an issue, and I prefer the look of a horizontal top tube, so for me the Pelican was perfect.
