im not going to dig in because it appears yall are being cranky for cranky’s sake. make your own videos, or just don’t watch them.
lol this is tarck right?
This is my solution usually.
The solution to 99.9999% of videos on the internet.
Also I’m cranky.
all i know is the only pedal that i have had catastrophically fail while riding was a fooker. never again.
that video was pretty dull; I had hoped for more interesting testing of the components.
It’s over ten mins for monetization—YouTuber revenues are way down rn, have some heart!!!
My chief concern with off-brand pedals is having the spindles fail. We have $50 composite pedals on all our bikes, and I’m not worried about getting speared by the jagged end of a broken spindle.
I for one, appreciate that he is even highlighting that there is a cheap copy on amazon and that there doesn’t seem to be much actually different about it. For some people that may be enough information. The length of it was fine because it covered different things the whole time.
My review is, after watching a bunch of other bike stuff while working from home in the background, this content is fine.
You all will argue for days and days about what kind of disk brake to hub mounting method is best.
I wanted him to bend both spindles until they broke and measured the difference, that’s all. That probably take a special equipment though.
I’m guessing he might after doing the long term test. At least he is doing a long term test. I’ve been watching a TON of product reviews and so many of them are just one or two uses without anything meaningful done or intended to do. I think the real information will come in 6 mo of this dude hucking and jumping and doing all sorts of fairly harsh stuff on the bike and then opening the pedals again.
I think Doug is the only person on youtube not trying to make that sweet ad money. Though he could definitely get some more clicks and likes with a few extra Pancake appearances.
This is similar to my main complaint. They tend to be this is how the thing looks and feels now. It fits nice. It worked nice once. And now I am moving onto another product. Well guy, I plan on using this for 3k miles. How will it work then?
I have a pair of Chesters that are several years old (2k miles or so). Spindles are bent, platforms gouged up, etc. No failures. Haven’t inspected the bearings, but they don’t feel gritty or crunchy.
It seems like there’s a race to get reviews published/posted. Manus want instant coverage, but actual riders/readers/viewers care more about long-term performance, durability.

Yeah I see this a lot. Or where they have a first impressions and then a follow up video. Like. I’d prefer just the one but right now I’m just putting these videos on my spare screen while I’m working.
I personally prefer doing one-year reviews, but manufacturers practically demand instant coverage.
Lately it’s been really frustrating because you’ll get a sample–say, tires–two weeks before the release/reveal, and they expect a full-on review the day it drops.
You’d have to build use simulators to give good reviews. But products are changing quick enough that this seasons tires won’t be next seasons best tires so I might as well get those.
I almost miss just being able to get the same tire three years in a row.
People love tire and bag reviews. They’re both insanely popular based on (my) google analytics’ data.
that makes sense to me, there’s so much that’s subjective about supple tires and bags— a lot of products can be compared well on specs but it’s hard to evaluate the ride feel of a tire or how useful a bag is without a review. especially if it’s a new item or something you have to order, where you can’t check it out at a shop first
Deity has a new composite flat. Gonna see if they pass the supwief-pedal-smash test.
Mr. Slorp exactly described my tolerances:
I have no desire to watch a long video of a thing that I could skim-read in 30 seconds. I hate when people send me videos, like now I’m under some obligation to watch this? uggh, no thanks.
I really go back and forth between wanting to watch a video and wanting to read an equivalent story. I should figure out what makes the difference for me.
