Sapim double square (secure lock)
Yep. These are pretty much the only nipples anyone should be using at this point. The only exception is if it’s a shallow enough rim that the tool interface protrudes past the inner wall. In this case you just use the hex version which has a shorter tool interface.
Does the dt Swiss driver fit on those sapim nipples?
I think it does, AFAIK they’re all 3.2mm, so the red dt driver ought to fit (described as 3.4mm for 3.2mm nipples). Park SW16, icetoolz 12B3/12B7 are also for 3.2mm. The sapim tool says it’s for 3.25mm nipples, but what’s 0.05mm when we’re converting from BWG anyway.
Thanks! What about the square end? The top, I guess
I know I should use those fancy nipples, but what if I already have a box of 500 normal nipples?
Come to think of it, I’ve built at least five wheelsets since I got that box so there’s probably no more than 180 nipples left.
I should just level up.
Where can I buy a big box of fancy nipples?
Isn’t that what we’re talking about?
Would be nice if Sapim had some dimensions for those on their site, but it looks like it adds 4mm to the total length
I found one place to buy them online

Is the DT driver an okay tool for the square ones?
That’s the dt red tool I was referring to. I’m reasonably confident it fits sapim double square as well even with the “3.4 for 3.2” description
Ha ha, joke’s on me, the stock BB is 127.5, not 131.
Even more funny, it’s also asymmetrical, about 5-6mm longer on the DS.
Also hilarious, I never checked the chain guard clearance.

New BB clearance crank was just sitting on the spindle
Should be. The Park one works on both brands. If there’s an actual difference, it must be small.
Those are the non-locking ones.
Rusty, HMU though the Outpost site. I’m doing a Sapim order Monday. I’ll gladly get you the nipple reup.
Looked at my the rim I’m going to use and it’s pretty shallow, looks like it’s plain nipple life for me.
Another dithering fail, the frame lock I bought (ABUS 5750L) doesn’t bolt up to the Katu. Katu bosses are wider than the lock’s mounting points. Hopefully there’s enough room to fabricate a couple of small adapter plates.
On the positive side, that lock has plenty of clearance inside for the tire and 60mm of fender.
The stock eKatu lock seems to be an Axa Solid Plus. That might be option #2 if option #1 doesn’t work.
Drill new holes in the lock?
Pretty sure they’d end up right where the cylinder mechanism thing is.
Need to do some measuring to see what’s possible.
Despite every bike here having a lock like that, I just went with this thing. Weighs like 3 kg. I just weave it through opposite ends of the basket when not in use.
