This might fit here, popped up on an industrial design blog. Not clear on exactly what he’s doing to produce, but has a certain je-ne s-sais-kawaii.

I’d rather pay money for that than for spurcycle

That is ace. I do wonder what the sound would be like with a thinish aluminium dome but love the idea and the execution. If I didnt already have an excess of bells this would be a consideration.

The best aluminium is only as good as the middling copper alloy (but that resonance/damping axis is log) and there’s no better metal. This affects sustain, so tone will be a different kettle of strikers, but my experience with awful cheap alu dome bells and the knog Oi! is that they are quite plinky, poor tone and sustain.

edit: couldn’t open the site, finally suceeded, I love the look of the formed dome from the previously embossed measurement section though.

edit2: ok, they sound much better than the garbage alu bells I’ve experienced, but still inferior to brass.

That’s really cool! Maybe I’m mis-understanding, but damn how many rice cookers are being thrown away?

I guess this is akin to those truck-tarp messenger bags in the sense that the original object isn’t necessarily disposable, but it does wear out with enough regularity to use for something like this?

Got me thinking about my old MSR camping pots.

edit: @marcsworks what blog?

As usual Tarck has a team of experts working around the clock!

I think it’s probably more the non-stick coating wearing off the bowl. Which might render the whole thing useless if bowl size isn’t standard or have replacements available.

so @blakey according to your chart titanium would be approximately equivalent to aluminum?

the blog was Core77 and normally I don’t much care for what comes up, but you get the occasional good bike stuffs.

@Rusty_Piton

Yep. I recall that weird ti bell, but I’ve never heard it

Formability, fragility, cost.

You could put a bunch of crystal glassware in your front rack filled with different amounts of water and rub the rims as you approach a ped and need to warn them…

looks like a solid silicon carbide bell would be where it’s at though. oh wait, high modulus means the pitch would be too high?

but if you ride away from someone fast enough the doppler effect will lower the pitch…

but if you’re approaching them rapidly…
