How 'bout a build thread? 1993 StumpJumper M2 Dadbike

We have a headset! (Sort of, more on that at the end.) It’s even NJS which is amusing to me.

With a spacer, obviously, which I almost don’t even need. I mean, I need something in there, the spacer is just technically too thick for what I really need.

This is it without the spacer:

Could just throw another washer on there, but I got spacers ahead of time just in case. Stack height turned out to be pretty right-on for the headtube/steerer combo.

Locknut is more than half engaged with the spacer.

So I don’t know. I’d like it to be more engaged, so I may just get another washer but could go either way. I enjoy the look of the gold band though.

Here’s some dithrin’ for ya as well:

One of these is a spacer from Blue Lug that is $1.72 on their site but was $4.50 from Crust (added to an order for yellow Voile straps that say Crust on’thm .. smh), and the other is from a pack of 5 for $5.99 from Porkchop BMX. Which is which?

The gold anno on one of them is closer to the majority of the other gold bits and I’m trying to decide if that matters to me. One of them is of a slightly higher quality than the other, but not in any kind of meaningful way.

I’ll probably just see if I can find some gold anno’d headset washers or a 3mm spacer (the ones I have are 5mm). Edit: I just ordered a 3mm one so this is all moot. Anyone want some 5mm 1” headset spacers?

None of this is fully installed yet because surprisingly the headset beat the crown race here. 2 days from freakin Tokyo to Texas. Fedex from Japan is impressive. So yeah no grease or anything since I have to un-install the crown race in order to return the too-big version of this headset.

And like everyone said, no issues with the race diameter mismatch at all. Feels solid, and that’s even without grease.

Haha yes! My Magicshine mount! (Assuming that’s what you mean.)

That fork is about to go away and I’ll have to figure out something else for that since the new one isn’t drilled for a brake.

The front end of that bike will be back to the way dog intended soon.

Edit: I was thinking about doing the insane thing of getting this business:

… but from a guy in Korea called Punch Blues (https://www.instagram.com/punchblues/) apparently making the same thing for 120 USD shipped, which is admittedly still extremely stupid solely for mounting a light.

Decided that was super dumb, and I don’t want to junk up the nice non-drilled chrome fork crown anyway.

I will likely get this jawn and try it out:

Still kind of a lot for what it is, but I don’t know what other thing would allow me to avoid some kind of handlebar mount and have it be under-mounted like that. Hopefully it works decently with the bolt in the Cinelli 1A stem.

Yeah, it belongs to Amy Danger. Here it is being ridden in the Bridge Pedal.

Beautiful bike. Good to see it still being used.

Yeah that’s absolutely my “grail” bike. Like literally that specific bicycle owned by that person, in the setup with the Shamals on it.

Rim text is making me angry

Haha well looky there …

Got the 26.4 crown race in, and even though it was listed as being a Tange Levin one, and it fits and it’s all fine, it was pretty different from the one that came with the too-big headset, so I had to remove the one I had installed and put the new one on. Guess it wasn’t a “CDS” version.

This one I ordered separately is thicker and has a different finish from the ones supplied with the headset - it’s a satin finish rather than being shiny chrome. The extra thickness increased the stack height just enough for me to not need a spacer, and just use the washer that came with the headset.

Definitely expedites things a bit, but I may still put the 3mm gold spacer in there because I think it would look cool, and only change it by 1mm.

Edit: I’m ordering a CDS / NJS one … why not it’s $8 and free shipping from Tree Fort.

Edit 2: Ruminating on this for a while, I realized if I was reading this, I’d wonder why room203 would wouldn’t want a slightly higher stack height to avoid a spacer. Well the reason is that the race I got didn’t fit as well on the crown and isn’t fully fully down - there’s like half a mm gap. It’d also fairly visible, and the thinner CDS version nested a lot better.

Next is getting getting everything cleaned and installed.

I just learned recently that the M2 frames were built in Portland. It would be pretty funny to build up a NJS Stumpy, though.

I’m really rooting for a gold spacer making its way onto that headset.

Is that a bike I see by the curb across the street?

Sure is.

I can already tell it’s a step-through frame, so odds are it’s not great, but I give it a look. Has some decent looking Sugino cranks on it. Surely low-teir given that it’s a Schwinn Traveler, but they have a good look to them. Figure I might see if they allow for more clearance on the non-drive side.

Kinda mangled the cap, but I don’t like those anyway.

I didn’t even need the impact, just based on how it looked I thought it would be tough to get that bolt out and grabbed it right off the bat, but it was like not even one uggadugga.

So I pull it and fit it up on the BB …

Nope! hahaha … they appeared more straight than the ones I have, so I had high hopes. Edit, i mean, they ARE more straight, just a different design - less wide where it goes on the BB. Still an OK double though for the bin.

3mm

This is allegedly a NOS Chris King spacer. Quality is nice, but who knows.

It’s one of those things where it doesn’t really make sense for someone to make up a story for no reason, like why lie about that, so I’m sure it is, just doesn’t have any markings on it. Got it from Yojimbo’s Garage in Chicago via eBay.

Figured so after checking out their Facebook page and seeing @Rusty_Piton as a friend of theirs, but seemed very legit even before that.
