you can certainly do it, but i think people doing 50+ miles on a fixed gear regularly are few and far between. on most bike rides, we’re spending easily 20-25% of the time coasting and getting little breaks, plus you can stand up and get your weight off the saddle (you can do this on a fixed gear going up, but not really going down, so you spend a lot more time seated). basically you get less breaks, so it will wear you out faster.

i think fixed gear rides get substantially harder once you go beyond 30-40 miles, where as on a road bike, going from 40 to 60 is easy, from 60 to 100, etc, all pretty doable. but you need that rest time.

probably actually you’d be fine if you stop and take breaks every 20 miles or so and get off the seat, stand up, stretch, etc.

Windy AF today, but quite protected in the bush. 2366 metres vert with a stonking tailwind home.

One of the guys at work has a rando friend that did events fixed for a season. He said it was the loneliest way to ride. You can’t match people’s speed and cadence to the terrain.

Hell yes BOGO delicious bread loaves

First recreational ride of the new year. Cold temps plus precipitation mean it will probably be the last for a while. Ice down low on the access road. Merino t shirt plus wind layer was great for moving uphill. Less great once I was traversing. It was probably mid to low 20s up on the ridge though. I only made it to the first of two lookout points. It was too cold and frozen to go higher.

Paused in a place that I don’t usually pause because a patch of ice caused me to put a foot down:

Now I’ve got frozen mud stuck to the bike…

I went for a bike ride 5 years ago. Recently dug out my old Pentax MX-1 and found some nice unpublished pics on it.

This thing rips with 29x2.6 and carbide studs on solid frozen trails with a couple inches if compacted snow on top. Absolutely on rails within a 12" wide ribbon of compacted snow and surfing everywhere else. Kinda warm too, high 20s I think.

Did you find the buried nuclear reactor?

At Palos? I remember something about old missile silos in Skokie or something near it but never heard about any reactors.

The reactor that produced the first controlled nuclear reaction is buried there! It was moved there from U of C. The whole place was a Manhattan Project site. It was turned into a forest preserve in the 70s. The keen eyed explorer can discover all sorts of crumbling ww2 infrastructure hiding in those woods.

Sneaky ride after work. 150 kms. Got home at 11:30. Buggerall climbing, hence about 3 times my normal distance. Finishing with tailwind and a coke was extra nice.

Buggerall climbing is, what, 2800 meters over 150k to you?

Bruh… based on your rides NZ is at least 10 different parts of the world in one.

1464 meters for this one.
