This was a counter protest in West Hollywood, an LGBTQ+ enclave. I’d place a safe bet that the “homophobic” protest signs were in fact held by homosexuals.

crazy how insidious oppression is that the very same groups affected by it can often find themselves speaking in the same language of their oppressors

I mean that sign/hat combo is absolutely still pushing a “lol trump gay for putin xD” narrative regardless of who’s holding it

they are making fun of the homophobes by celebrating homosexuality

I’m sure you could find out the groups who organized the counter-protest if you want to let them know about their problematic behavior

oh so “we suck Russian cock” is supposed to be a celebration?

yeah sorry for posting my feelings online I guess I’ll get on a plane to LA and go tell them my thoughts directly!

Camp and satire have long been useful tools, particularly in the gay community, to celebrate and fight back against oppression. I have no dog in this fight but I think you may be over-reacting.

don’t really need you explaining gay culture to me but thanks!

It’s weird to me, because it has two separate things going on.

One is ‘show this hateful person doing something that’s beautiful and normal that they hate, so you’re driving them mad with their own bigotry’. Totally on board. Valid technique.

The second is ‘let’s show them in all their ugliness, via exaggeration to the point of generating disgust, driving them crazy via mockery’, which is another valid tactic.

Putting them both together in the same image is confusing, and IMO leads to conflating ‘gay/trans’ being portrayed as ‘ugly’. Not intentional. But easily open to this kind of interpretation.

There’s so much actual critique of trump and putin you can use that to choose to make it a queer/trans punchline is not only punching down but frankly letting them off the hook for all the actual shit they deserve criticism for.

All I’m going to say before I log off is that I’m sorry if anyone is offended, and also that’s kind of the point.
