The pride of our people

Finally got to ride this trail behind my house. Last year I had covid, the year before that I think was wildfire smoke, before that broken ribs maybe. Didn’t plan to ride it, had only one bottle and a little TJs pouch of trail mix, but was feeling pretty good and decided to ride it before the next catastrophe strikes. Rode back down giddily bonked, cold plunged a waterfall thinking maybe that triggers fat metabolism (like I said hella bonked). A grand time.

scouted a ride to a mining ghost town, tried to turn it into a loop, ended up hitting a bunch of private property and extending our 32 mile 5200’ route to a 40 mile 6700’ route. lots of chunk, lots of hike a bike, lots of alpine views. came home and made pizza

I know you’re in the mountain west, but looking through this thread I can’t tell if you’re in CA, NV, MT, or CO? You seem to find great settings to ride in though

NV, Sierra side

above franktown rd overlooking washoe lake?

little bit further south, between Ash Canyon and Kings Canyon, but that is Washoe Lake and the Virginia Range

you could pedal to the elementary school I went to in about 45 minutes

not sure I ever saw it that green in august

I’ve only been a frequent visitor but the eastside has always been a personal slice of heaven for me

rode around grand island, ny again. this is the big island in the middle of the niagara river.

last time i did this it was like 94 degrees with 90% humidity
yesterday it was about 74 degrees but raining, which was way better

as you can see from these pictures of canada, it is very very very flat. 351 feet of elevation on a 25 mile ride. it is in fact so flat that the one “hill” has a strava segment called Harvey Hill! it’s 22 feet of elevation.

i would never recommend riding here unless you are already in buffalo, but is actually a remarkably pleasant ride. the entire west side is closed to car traffic and has basically no spots where cars cross the bike path. they took a four lane “parkway” i guess is the best way to describe it and turned it into a two lane road for cars, and then the other half is for bikes and pedestrians. there’s a humongous grass median so you’re easily 100 feet away from cars at the closest point.

we should tell them to do this with the lie

Yeah, but who wants to ride to Long Island?

it is amazing. it’s actually properly paved because it’s a road, so there aren’t tree roots fucking you up every 10 meters.

the whole island has like no traffic anyways.

i’d rather ride to the trails I like to ride on than drive to them

Rode bikes with @frikki on Sunday. It’s a good thing we have the same ideas about what constitutes a bike ride.

This 68 yr old hero pictures below, Chris, whose life we want to emulate, was also game.

This is the “summit” of a lesser known Catskills peak. About 1/4 mile of single track from the eastern boundary of the ski hill that I frequented last winter.

So you figured out the route from the trails we rode last week to the summit?

Yeah. I had hiked it three weeks ago. The connector still needs some cleanup (though we did a lot). Need to get up there with a saw. The descent from the summit is so good. Better than a not-purpose-built trail should be. The smell of brake pads filled the air.
