Did my first dirt adventure after my knee injury, kept feeling good so I kept going. Ended up at 20 miles, 2.2k in vert and not feeling too sore. Did get solidly sunburnt. Socal is cruising into a 95 degree weekend already
Mission creep at the berm spot:
Lip glamour shot (it looked good but I redid it after this photo because I thought it needed more pop):
Eventually on this trail you get to this steep bit. Not bad for being a short bike ride away from the apartment.
Shit that makes me wanna go dig! I’m not into jumps much, but I love building something with just the right flow, so you’re not needing to pedal much but also not really needing the brakes. Just some swoopy fun in the woods.
Local trailbuilding news: someone(s) have been dumbing down the trails, I think it’s actually a constant battle. Anyhows recently someone has gone and dumbed-up some spots and put all the awesome tricky rocks back in place and I love it.
The lakefront is closed so I’ve been riding on the river. It’s almost like people don’t know about this path. All I saw was two old ladies and one fisherman.
I spent about 15 minutes making a nice huge pile of logs to block the runaround of one of my favorite features.
blah blah blah how many photos of a berm can I post. Can rip around it without braking now if you’re brave, but you can’t see the exit until the last second because of the tree roots.
Finally got a thin but resilient stump out of the middle of the trail by digging around it and sawing it below ground level where the black dirt spot is in the trail.
And started cleaning up in the area. I left this in place.
What? Nail it to those roots at your berm apex, that’s how trails get their names!
that’s why I left it. I hope to put it somewhere that will dissuade riff-raff from putting their empties and drugs bags all over the place.
Rode a bike on the same trails as always, but tried out the afton clipless shoes. I haven’t ridden clipless for about a year and really hated it. The shoes felt like clipless vans, and I usually ride in vans so it was at least familiar.
Went for a ~130km ride this morning. Headed north out of Sydney to the Hawkesbury River, then along the river for a bit. Was nice. Still not cold here at all. Saw a lot of cool birds.
We’ve been slowly building up our weekend long-ride distance over the past few weeks, coming out of winter. Two weeks ago, we did a 75ish miles ride to a nude beech:

Actually, the destination was the former Ames shovel factory (apparently Ames is now part of the same conglomerate as True Temper):

Last night, we realized that long rides during summer weather are going to be tough because water fountains are shut off, ice cream shops are closed, etc. So we decided to go for a long one today since weather was warm enough that we wouldn’t need an indoor stop to warm up but cool enough we wouldn’t need to refill water. I tweaked a previous route to lay out a 110 mile loop down to Duxbury on the coast. The ride went well. Averaged 17 mph; legs felt good. I ran out of water with 5 miles to go and had a little extra food in my pockets at the end. My wife goaded me into town-line sprints all day long. Roads were pretty quiet although some of the towns to the south don’t seem to be taking the social distancing thing too seriously. We rode past tidal marsh, several cranberry bogs, and lots of old colonial houses including John Adams’ birthplace and some others built in the 1600s.

I forced the boss lady out on a e-bike ride. She’d lost her nerve after doing a “riding in the city” course where the group was monstered 3 times in 2 hours by twat motorists. One lady actually rear ended them. Anyway, she refuses to turn on the e-bike motor until it gets really steep. I wouldn’t last 100 metres pedalling that thing with no assist. Kept running into people who we know including an ex workmate whose house was innundated with waves the other day with the big swell. He found one of his goldfish 100 metres away at a neighbours house. Either the stress of having his house ravaged by the surf turned him grey… Or he hasn’t had access to hair dye in the last 6 weeks…
Is that a Bafang 750W setup on her bike?
gas stations will be open, they sell gallon jugs of water and bags of spicy peanuts. My current summer water setup for 4+ hour rides is two 26oz bottles in the cages, a third in a half frame bag.
I tried triathalon butt rocket cages, but didn’t like that much weight up high, and a 2L water bladder in the frame bag, which is kinda overkill when most roads take you past a gas station in not more than an hour of riding.
I’m definitely thinking about how to be self-contained, not just self-supported. I’d rather minimize contact with other people.
How is this possible
It’s the 500W Even when she does turn it on she mostly sticks to power setting 1 of 5. The 750-1000W ones must be a handful for a novice. I use it on commutes sometimes and it’s great for that but the power comes in pretty abruptly when tootling around town at lower speeds.
He has a small pond in his deck. After the waves hit he found “Ronnie” flipping about on the deck and he got rescued into a bucket. A day or two later they found one of the other fish up the road, dead of course. Waves s destroyed his garage door and when right into his house. It’s a bit of a sandy salty mess right now, but doesn’t look too bad from the outside. Freak weather system as it was a completely calm and sunny day. Just massive waves. It must sound like we live in a village but on a 20 km loop on the bikes we ran into 4 couples from our respective work places. They just changed the speed limit on the south coast from 50 to 30 kmh because so many people are out walking and apparently cyclists and car drivers are taking liberties with their safety.
Did a quick ride to the lake and back with Ada. She is stronger every week.
Waited out a 30 minute thunderstorm.
Got very dirty in some mud.
I tried riding the Ronde PDX route solo, but leaving from my house. It would have been 66.6 mi and 10k ft of climbing, but I left off the Hillsdale part after I had a Jens Voigt moment on Myrtle.
Here is the only photo I took. A sad Skyline Restaurant with no customers.
Crazy minter day here today. Dropped down to level three. Compulsory for 2 weeks before we see how stuff is progressing. Not much change. A few more freedoms. Jumped on some trail for part of my descent but it was wet and I had too much air in my tires. Not sure how wide angle puts a filter on pix.
