Franklin lane would be fine if they protected the intersections at Foushee, 2nd, and 4th. Back when I left the house for work, I took it three or four days a week and was constantly getting cut off at those intersections.
The things i’m really eager to see in rva proper are functional bike access eastbound onto the Leigh St viaduct (as opposed to the chaos hell of hospital and construction and hospital construction) and whatever Bridgepark winds up doing for cross-James connection.
if the new regional trails are 60% as good as the cap trail, I’d be totally satisfied with them. They really did an excellent job with it.
Cranked out another epic day on the tandem - we both bounced out of work around 2, hit the road by 3, and were back by 9:15 or so after ~55mi and 3500’ of climbing. We finally summited the venerable Lookout Mountain and slayed a couple miles of singletrack on the way into town. This tandem upgrade is really taking us to new levels. Time to ditch the old one for real.
Oh and if you’re wondering about the goofy poses, they’re for the checkpoint ride I’ve organized where folks hit spots and we donate money. Kinda fun way to get the ride group out and about asynchronously.
Rode up and over the pass into Lake Mead yesterday after work. Didn’t quite make it down to the ranger station/entrance, but it was still nice. Trying to enjoy it before it becomes unbearably hot.
Finally did a ride on the new old road bike. Could not have been a better day out there. Classic bay area. So nice. Also i am in pretty good shape considering its been a few years since i rode all the way up there. Plus standard double instead of compact on the old bike. Got about 20 miles in. I was feeling so good i didnt want to go home. Bike feels nice. Going to take a little practice shifting from the dt at speed. Or just coast who cares.
We have a WFH challenge in my office, has to be handed in tomorrow (Monday), a strava-art piece. I got creative while waiting for my buddies this morning. I’m calling it a hedge trimmer…
Got out with a couple friends and rode a 60 mile loop on mostly logging roads around Saddle Mountain. I’ve been doing mostly meandering solo rides lately so it was nice to pick up the pace a bit with a group even though it kinda kicked my ass.
yet another coastal ride today. it’s getting toasty in the bay area but it’s still pretty OK down by the ocean. It’s been a while since I did Stage Road between Pescadero and San Gregorio and I forgot how nice it is.
Big Rock Drive is just past Topanga Canyon, and goes straight up averaging 10% over 1.6 miles before hitting a gate to Big Rock Motorway, a partially paved fire road which continues climbing at steeper grades before turning to gravel and leveling out ever so slightly. It ends at Tuna Canyon, which is a very steep one-lane descent closed to uphill traffic.
I had been up to the gate before on a demo 2020 S-Works SL6 with a mid-compact crank and disc brakes, but never made the connection to Tuna. Today I rode my S-Works, albeit a 1994, with a lowest gear of 39-27t. I did a fair amount of hiking when I lost traction on the bike, but I think on a gravgrav bike with a decent low gear it could be fully rideable.
^I think I rode Tuna Canyon a few years ago when I was visiting LA - it was the scariest descent that I’d ever ridden at the time. Would love to go back now and see if it’s still as terrifying.
Got back on the goose again this week after a few months of exclusively riding the road bike. Everything needs replacing but it feels good to be back. 85k’s of flat back roads after lunch from the city>mtb park>train ride back.
There were a few sketchy moments on some of the rocky descents but overall a perfect amount of underbiking. Hard sunset chase at the end capped off the ~day ride~ sensations perfectly
Only had time for a short ride this “weekend” so took Ada down to the river bottoms. We didn’t get far but she found a way to maximally experience the place
