I got one from Tony on member appreciation day. I’m stoked, but it’s not really my style. I would be more stoked if I snagged one of those Mark V Pros. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a sick setup ideas. Every idea is welcome. I’d be super stoked if there were some fixed/ss cyclocross folks out there.
bashguard fsa crankset, canti brakes. maybe a fixed/free hub.
FUCK YOU!!!
ps: i also got one too. and hope you stay here
I just finished building mine up for CX today. I STRONGLY recommend using the Tektro 720 cantilever brakes - I tried three different kinds before I took everyone’s advice and bought these. The biggest problem I had with all the cheap Avid-style brakes was the lack of adjustibility in the pads, causing the rear wheel to be constantly rubbing the pads. The 720s completely solved the problem, as well as added additional mud clearance and greater stopping power.
I don’t run mine fixed, only SS. I used old tubular wheels with the threaded-on freewheel (pre-freehub), redished the wheel, and added a cheap BMX freewheel. I was able to buy both wheels (Mavic GP4s laced to Sun hubs) for $40 on eBay, and since then I’ve seen a ton of similar deals. Of course, you don’t have to use tubulars, you can easily do the same thing with a clincher/freewheel combo and it should cost about the same price. Another option is to just use a freehub and an singlespeed cog - this is the easiest way to get a straight chainline (something I haven’t nailed, yet).
My idea for a setup was just your basic SS cross machine - the lightest and fastest I could make it, without spending too much money and without making the bike impractical or un-rideable. The total build weight is just around 20 pounds, which isn’t too bad for CX. I have a CF fork, but I don’t want to put it on because I love the orange paint job so much, but I’ll probably break down and do it, since I’d love to get the bike’s weight into the teens.
I’ll post some pictures tomorrow, when it’s light out. I’m going to hit some trails in the morning, so it should be well-worn by the time I post anything.
your shit arleady came in?!! i got a mark v… but i havn’t received it yet. bummer
what cranks did you go for bone? how about your gear ratio?
I got some slightly-scratched NOS 105 cranks off of eBay for $30, and I’m running a 41x18 ratio. The ratio was determined by the spare 130BCD chainring I had, and the smallest BMX freewheel I could find in my parts bin, but it’s pretty close to what I normally ride (I like to spin). I put a BBG bashguard on my cranks and I think that’s a pretty swell addition. The next and final piece of the bike is the inside chain guard, though I think the odds of me dropping the chain are pretty low.
I got one as well. I hope mine is orange too, but the green would be classy. I went out and tried a cyclocross course today on my commuter bike to get a feel for it, and had a total blast. So I’ll definitely be building this thing up proper cross style with shallow drops, two-bolt clipless and all that. What wheelset should I get? Will CXP22’s be sturdy enough? IRO/Kinlin? Do I really need Salsa Delagado-type rims?
I really want to see this bike now.
what size? if you arent into it I might be tempted to take it off your hands…
Anyone have a definitive answer for rear spacing? I read 120 and 132.5 on the IRO site. I’ll be commuting on it. If it’s 132.5, I’m thinking Velocity Dyads laced to Shimano mtn bike hubs with a ss setup.
No one? Come on, at least BC, you gotta know
I’m pretty sure it’s 132.5, and it’s definitely not 120. It’s steel, so you can bend whatever hub you want in there. I think mine is spaced 126.
It’s spaced at 132.5 so that it can accept either 130 or 135 rear hubs.
thnx gaiz. mtn bike hubs it is.
two things…
bonechilling, is this a frame you picked up from customer appreciation day, or did you already have it?
have any of you guys heard about the status of your frame, whether it was shipped or not?
I bought it back in the group buy for $160. I wish it cost $7.
Tony said he’d send out an email with tracking info by the end of the week.
edit: I’ve been watching my inbox like a fucking hawk
Im looking at cranksets. do you know of any cx cranksets that come stock with bash?
