Is it to early to start talking about cold weather?

internal fred temperature = actual temperature - 30

also if it’s cloudy, you damn sure need the biggest bulkiest late 90s burley rain jacket and pants set you can find

I finally finagled some free rain pants last year.

I have worn them about 5x.

2x I only chose them because it was super cold and slightly rainy and I felt underdressed.
1x I was going to the snow and I own no snow pants.

Worth it for the few times I wore them, but jesus… some people… every damn day. Even when it’s 60 out and not evening raining.

Back on track. .what are some good booties that ya’ll use and in what conditions do you use them/plus what socks/shoes/etc?

Winter wear is pretty easy 'cause the answer is always wool. Need good foot options? Wool. Need good gloves? Wool. Need a good baselayer? Wool. Good insulating layer? Wool. What about a hat? Well you should get some wool. I made shants out of some wool pants a few years back that were tits up until they wore out.

If you don’t wear wool, that’s the only time it gets remotely complicated because you have so many options which are all pretty shitty but some less shitty than others.

Footwear is easy. SPDs + wool socks is pretty good for fun rides. Ain’t never tried booties 'cause don’t do fun rides when wet + freezing collabo 'cause ice anyway. If not fun riding, boots + wool socks collabo + powergrips/feetbelts works awesome for commuting. Platforms work alright too for commuting

those black and yellow sugois are terrible in actual rain, decent in dry cold

the gore ones (i forget which model) have been surprisingly crappy and also fit ridiculously large (my “42-44” pair fits like clown shoes over 43 diadora shoes)

i bought some from probikekit years ago as an order throw-in and those have been surprisingly decent, best actual rain coverage i’ve found. DHB brand or something

oh, socks are usually smartwool ski socks, sometimes over smartwool ski liners

only use one pair of shoes, generic lace-up fred sleds.

good stuff

Don’t forget the hiviz helmet cover.

People wear balaclavas in the 60’s here. No joke.

Did two hours in the low 20s today. Rando’s tip about wiggling toes was spot on. Toes got cold, but not numb. Had Bar Mits on, they are the shit. Totally cozy the entire time.

I want to back up what grumps said about wool. I have never regretted any piece of Icebreaker I have purchased, they do it right. Their sport wool is softer and more durable than smartwool retains its shape and its still 98% wool. Their jerseys are uggo, but really get some base layers from them.

Rando, I didnt think you were laughing at me, but I would have understood if you had been it was absurd. I didnt break down emotionally so much as I was in more pain than I can recall in recent memory.

todd, what did you wear on torso/arms?

i have a few pairs of boobies that i wear. i have the defeet slipstreams that i use durring those crisp cold days 45-55F. they do get warm in anything above it and have alright wind blocking abilities
http://www.defeet.com/60663/Slipstreams.html

on spring days where its wet but not cold, i use the specialized squadra shoe covers. these work pretty well as just a light shoe cover in the mornings as well. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftr/mens-apparel/socksshoe-covers/squadra-shoe-covers

and on cold and wet winter days i use the capo tempest rain bootie. these are super warm and do a really good job of keeping the elements out. this is my go to cover when it gets below 45 and/or the sky starts falling down. when it does get warmer than that the cover gets too warm and your feet will start to perspire. http://www.capocycling.com/apparel/booties/tempest-rain-bootie

Certainly warm, but maybe a little bulky.

ATMO this is one area where synthetic materials are getting to be nearly on par with organics.

Next time someone pisses me off, I’m gonna fill them with hairspray and sparkles.

at the moment mostly wearing ls 200g icebreaker base layer, rapha club jersey, and rapha wind jacket. I plan to change that up when my new LS jersey gets here, I think it only works cause the wind jacket doesnt actually breath that well.

If its gona be over 30 I just rock a 150g sl base layer, club jersey and them big S arm warmers.

For the legs I cut the shitty chamois out of some sugino winter tights, and now I wear them over bibs/leg warmers.

modern science: it’s totally sweet.

Snotty, I resent your assumption that I’m not already wearing wool socks.

I’m riding 3-5 hours, lowest temps around 27-30. I can only for thinner wool socks in my cycling shoes, so booties are a must.

Toast. Gore booties do run huge. I’m using the 39-41 size and its fine for length in my size 43 shoes.

Lulz my phone changed smitty to snotty

Snotty boobies.

lollin

SPDs that fit properly are a bit of a bitch to get thick enough wool socks into. At one point I was thinkin of getting a pair of cheap SPDs in a half size too big for thick sock action.

I accidentally-ed some beat Mega Sidi Doms on ebay (thought they were standard width) but I’m too lazy to put new cleats in em’.

For below freezing, or slightly above and melty, you can’t beat a nice pair of neoprene booties. So much warmer when your shoes only allow thin socks. Most of this Winter I was wearing normal cycling socks.

If my boobies were boobies they’d be saline judging by the amount of dried salt on them.
