Hmm… I think I misread the chart for the Park tm1 because I’m close to 150kgf and I thought I was around 135ish. Might need to back it off a little. They’re not weird yet but may get that way when I ride them.
What stainless strings are you using?
DT Comp, which is as light a spoke as I like to use.
Same. I’ve tried revs or whatever the next lightest is, and it just feels a little off.
Never built a wheel with Revs, though I have owned a wheel built with them. It was floppy as hell under my not insubstantial mass.
Tried CXRays once coz I drank the koolaid and they were terrible. Ended up swapping 'em out for comps.
Used to really dig Wheelsmith DB14s back in the day. Haven’t built a wheel with 'em in ages, though.
WS DB’s are 2.0/1.7/2.0
Comps are 2.0/1.8/2.0 with longer butting transition.
I like the WS DB14 as they’re no floppier than the comps and come in bag of 50’s.
When I build with Comps it’s because I had them at the shop. Sapim DB’s are pretty great at .60 a pop.
Shoot for 23 on the gauge, DS. Figure 10-15% tension loss with non tubeless. 20% with tubeless.
I’ve seen some rims drop 30% tension when tubeless. Was kinda nuts. Wheels are still straight and totally fine after a couple years.
I’m at 22-23 on the gauge with the tire on and fully inflated.
Wheel is true and tension is really balanced, but I’m still thinking of backing off a little.
It’s one of those things. Like, I’m not sure I can feel the difference, but I can kinda feel the difference.
Deflate tire. Check tension.
Fact: We build race wheels to around 90ish kgf. Keeps them from breaking when riders bounce off rocks and slam through berms at mach 10.
I’d run them down to 120-125kgf without a tire.
I’ll do this.
For folks about half my mass I’m sure.
Nah. Mckay is a big boy that breaks frames on the daily.
Luckily Giant is pretty generous with people putting holes in their frames. They just need to think about what color stickers/housing/grips, etc I now need for the fox shocks to match the chameleon colors.
What do you consider stress relieving? It’s term that often refers to many other things that are not stress relieving. Squeezing pairs really hard is really the best way to do it. Goal is to bring the spoke tension close to it’s plastic deformation (I’m not using the terminology correctly).
I squeeze pairs of spokes. I used to lay the wheel down and drive the bus, but heard that was not as good
i’ve been doing the jam an old nds crank between groups and twist. seems to do okay- the stress being relieved is internal stresses from the bending of the elbows right?
Everyone agrees that Stan’s MK3 rims are not the flimsy shit from before, right? The 650b Crest comes in 28h and weighs less than a fart, so it’s high on my list for new NFE wheels
Agreed. Huge improvement.
The new offset Arc from race face is hella good too. Heavier… but offset is cool.
oh damn. that is rather light
Right? Lighter than most carbon and substantially so
