Is there a wheelbuilding thread yet?

i know i know, i just find it procedurally inelegant. kinda wish shutter / kasai would make their flanges a few mm taller

Too many grams.

how are nipple and spoke sizing done? i need to replace some corroding/cracking alu nipples and want to order the replacement in brass. the total length of the nipple (from square wrench part to flathead cap part) is 12.44mm, and the diameter of the spoke before it’s threaded is 1.97mm.
does this mean DT Swiss 2.0x12mm nipples would work? i’m a dumb and my brain can’t process the imperial gauge stuff.
my last build was with new spokes and nipples but this time i have no idea what the spokes on my old wheelset are.

Yes.

In fact, nipple length pretty much doesn’t matter with few exceptions. Some longer nipples have extended threads, some don’t. In all cases, the should be long enough to pass through the nipple where it seats into the rim.

would i need a bladed spoke holder to build/rebuild a wheel bladed spokes? assuming i’m reusing the spokes

Yes, but you can make one pretty easily by cutting small notch with a hacksaw into some scrap.

The easy answer is “buy a grey pair of wheels from Craigslist” but believe me I’m looking.

I have a need for a set of 650b wheels with micro spline and 12x100/142. I have a single wtb freq rim and a zillion spokes.

What is the best value oriented 32h hub set in 12x100/142 with microspline?

Edit:
Looking at this for rear

Cutting a slot in an old crank arm is so good for this.

just relaced an old rear wheel that had corroding nipples. tomorrow i’m taking it to the coop so i can use their stand and tension gauge. it’s definitely not worth paying for a rebuild on a wheelset that I’ve had for 10+ years, but they’re light and still got plenty of breaking surface. plus it was easy enough to do while watching netflix. the front doesn’t look as bad so i’ll work on it another time. these will be the 6th and 7th build/rebuilds I’ve done. I still can’t true a wheel for my life.

every time i do one of these i wonder if it’s the last time. I just can’t bring myself to junk a mostly fine set of wheels though!

Anyone seen a wtb kom i23 (with the blue orange logos) split at the joint? The decal is split but no daylight

We don’t have a “frailty of human memory” thread, so I guess this goes here: I apparently rebuilt a dyno wheel with a tubeless rim at some point? I pulled my older road bike out to give it a clean and make sure it was good to go as a backup, and realized that it had a DT r460 on it, not a TK540.

I checked my repair logs, and there’s a cryptic note about my having rebuilt the wheel at some point in the last year, but like, zero memory on my part of having done so.

I guess… good job?

So I guess I forgot 100% of what I learned a year ago about wheelbuilding. Couldn’t get it laced coz didn’t have a chair in my cellar (except for the 2 I fucking forgot about). Got a nipple stuck in the rim for 10 minutes. Dropped the damn hub! And failed thrice to get the logo lined up. Surely DT hubs to DT rims line up exactly, right?

Anyway. I’ll try again tonight.

Well, you remembered one of the most important steps: walk away when it becomes frustrating and before you toss the whole thing in the woods.

i have yet to successfully build a wheel without doing this, tbh

I have a special dance that I do that frees the nipples very quickly. Don’t know how I stumbled upon it.

Not that rim in particular but I’ve seen the decals on other pinned rims split at that point while the rim was still good and true with no gaps.

Dumbest of the Q:
How long can you ride on a flat on a carbon rim?

I’ve rolled in flat at the end of a brevet when it was too dark to patch and I was out of tubes. I can count the times I’ve had the pressure too low and snakebit.

What happens when you get a flat on carbon rims with 700x30ish?

Likely something expensive.

If you’re running tubeless I’d say try one of those new Vittoria airliners that act as a run-flat system.

I’ve been meaning to try one but now probably waiting for wiggle bike build to bother.
