it wouldn't be tarck without a dyno thread

Braden/Outpost Richmond or Hunt?

I had some Very Big Thoughts about centerlock vs 6 bolt rotors a few years ago. Basically I think CL is way better because there’s only one thing to tighten and you do so with a tool that lets you really get it tight. I don’t like small fiddly little bolts, particularly not in large numbers. 6 bolt torx can absolutely get fucked.
However, valid points were raised about the field servicability of 6 bolt, in that you’re probably not going to pack a bb removal tool.

So there’s that.

OK maybe that’s not actually tubeless tho

I’m asking mainly because I’m about 75% complete on building a set of wheels that hit all of those things. They were Super Important at the time. Now, I’m not sure they’ll get used and selling them could be a realistic option. They’d probably be at the higher end of what you’re looking to spend tho (DT 350 road 11 rear hub, Shimano UR705 dyno, DT RR 481 rims, DT comp spokes, 32H).

There’s also an IQ-X in my bin that was destined for the same bike…

on that thought its going on a bike I have multiple bongs in with nice tires, I should probably spend a little.

is iq-x still the good one to get?

Buying bike parts is easy, preparing to part with them is more difficult.

Between a Cyo Premium and IQ-X, I liked the IQ-X better for a faster bike. It’s brighter and it seemed to throw that light farther ahead, just not as wide as the Cyo. A real dyno nerd might have better input here.

this is road bike so longer throw is also my interest

I don’t know how necessary it is to be able to remove your rotors in the field. But if you have the CL lockrings that are the same as cassette lockrings, you can remove them with one of those Unior mini lockring tools.

Oh I’m not a big field service fundamentalist, but it’s definitely something people care about. If I do the Silk Road Mountain Race or something, I’ll worry about 6 bolt vs CL, or hydro vs cable brakes.

Given that all my rides are technically within a long and embarrassing Lyft ride back to my house / a nearby town, I am not that worried

Get a son dynamo and a dt350, you’re now $500 lighter

Get some DT RR421 or similar and now you’re 200-300 lighter

DT comp spokes at $1 a piece

Now you have a set of wheels you can basically do anything with and are mostly bombproof

You won’t be sorry

hard to disagree with the suggestions @earwig made.

if you want a single front wheel, that Outpost Richmond front wheel is a great buy. Shimano DH-UR705 is the choice I’d make for a budget 12mm thru axle dynamo hub. I was going to suggest having Universal Cycles build a wheel around this hub, but the build I priced out there (Alex Adventure 2 rim instead of the Velocity A23, DT Swiss Competition butted spokes, brass nips) was only $10 cheaper and requires way more mental overhead to order.

And if you’re after a full wheelset, the
Hunt Superdura wheelset is a fuckin’ STEAL. Even the front wheel alone is a great deal for a wheel with the SON hub (although about 2x as much as the Outpost Richmond wheel above, and it looks like you will be waiting until August).

Have bought wheels from Outpost before and would again

For plunking around in the country late at night, definitely; it’s not nearly as wide of a light field as the IQ++, but it’s got a lovely long throw.

Someone pointed out once, somewhere, maybe a podcast, that if you travel a bit then it’s a good idea to remove your rotors when you pack your wheels away in your travel bag, so they don’t get squished. The Shimano system would make this real easy.

Peep @ kstoerz IG story before it expires. The dynamo test lab can now play back recorded rides when testing hubs for power output and charging device performance

I prefer the CYO Premium beamway. It’s wider and less gappy when turning and more than long enough for any kind of riding ATMO

is this person on tarck? it looks like they live in minneapolis

edit: he definitely does, I recognize the bike he rescued from being stolen as belonging to one of my coworkers lol. also works at the local bike nerd shop that I don’t go to often enough

Is there a dynamo lamp up to the task of singletrack/MTB-ish riding?

Possibly more about the dynamo? I think the Shimano is supposed to generate the most watts at the lowest speed.
