it wouldn't be tarck without a dyno thread

I want to do this on my technium so badly but that’s just outside of my joke budget.

I’ve not, but diy junctions work really well (I cut the coax short and solder mini-banana connectors in) so there’s absolutely no reason why the pre-made wouldn’t work as well

I spent some time in the garage installing the new Supernova lights and running the cables as tidily as possible without internal routing. Got everything ran, headlight worked in the stand, got the tail light connected and nothing worked. So I stripped it all back apart and got to testing, thinking maybe I accidentally shorted something. Nope, it’s all passing current and looks fine. But no light!

Start looking into light compatibility worried that the E3 tail was somehow not supposed to be used with the E3 Pure headlight. No, they work together just fine, and should work with the 6v 3w Alfine hub with no issues!

Just as I start ripping everything apart to look at the internals of the headlight just to make sure nothing got shorted or a solder joint broke or something, I noticed the insulation sticks a little too far into the lego, like maybe enough to prevent a solid connection if it’s not perfectly seated. Strip the insulation back a hair and it all starts working perfectly.

:colbert:

I was SO close to ditching it all and finding some faded old Knogs in the parts bin and not looking back.

I have: E3 tail light
I want: to run it with ??? Another light

What do I need?

Any Supernova headlight.

Nooooo

Reminds me of the time I had some uninsulated connectors coming off my headlight and using the brakes would cause my lights to short out on my v-noodle

Is there any argument at all for dyno’ing my old hardtail with one of the round beam lights? The obvious and sane answer is no, but I also have a Breezer Finesse that I barely ride that has all the parts save for the light head to do it.

Can’t quite figure out why I have the itch for this. It’s dumb, for sure. I mean, I night ride plenty, but that’s why I bought my nice Outbound lights.

The dither is real.

To chuck it in the bin (aka resell it on ebay) and buy the equivalently tiny B&M taillight.

Anyone know if Exposure’s dyno hub is just a rebranded SP, because it sure looks like it to me?

I think it’s more of a rebranded kasai, which supposedly came out of an old sp factory

Anyone use the Exposure Revo? I got a deal on one from Pro’s Closet. It works, but in my 10-15 minutes test ride just now only 2/4 LEDs illuminated. They’re the two lateral ones. No action from the top and bottom.

One thing that seemed weird setting it up was that the wire plug from the hub to the lamp doesn’t fully insert. The one from the lamp to the taillight is a bit shorter, fully inserts. Maybe it’s fine and you just have to ride farther/faster to get them all lit?

Maybe there’s shmoo in the plug or you need to push significantly harder

I pushed as hard as I dare, looked inside carefully with a light. Kinda wondering if I just have the wrong connecter. Seems weird to design it to stand proud like that.

We’ll, shit. From their FAQ:

"Why do 2 of the LED’s on my Exposure Revo appear not to work?

When using the Revo the horizontal LED’s will alight after a short while riding and the vertical LEDs will come on soon after. As soon as you stop riding the vertical LEDs will go off and the horizontal LEDs will stay on in stand light mode until the power is drained from the internal capacitors."

In 2016 it was a rebranded SP. Not sure about now. I have a feeling my light only had 3 LEDs. Can’t recall. It was a pretty solid unit. Edit. Looks like 4.

OK, more testing has revealed the following. 2/4 LEDs is standard, they light up right away. After riding 5-10 minutes the third begins to glow. The fourth seems to only light for extended descents. I suppose lighting all four constantly would create more drag and be a bummer. The scaled deployment of the array is pretty clever, perceived drag is quite low.

The stand light starts as two but quickly fades to one. That one stays pretty bright, though.

for my mental health I don’t follow along with bike part dithering
so I ask for help
in 2023 what is going to be my most budget optimal way to get a solid 32h 700c TA dynamo tubeless rim setup going? including light. I can build but I don’t feel like I need to.

notes: have an IQ-XS, would prefer brighter lamp. have only used Shimano dynamo hubs and I’ve been happy with them.

What width(s) of tires are you wanting to use and what’s your budget?

6-bolt or CL?

32mm GP5K only

I don’t have an opinion on 6 bolt or CL. should I? stock hubs on there now are CL.

budget is the intersection of cheap and quality. I hate spending money on bikes I don’t take care of but I don’t want junk (unhelpful, sorry)
