Dear Affinity Bikes,
I am the proud rider of a shimano dynamo hub, an IQ-X head lamp and a Secula Plus tail lamp.
We’ve been running that two strand wire from hub to head lamp and head lamp to tail lamp and never paid us no attention to which piece of a wire is which and it always just illuminates as all of us might hope.
Once above 3 or 4 mph the IQ-X does a thing where the light switch ‘button’ on the back of the head lamp will not turn the lamp(s) off. I am required to come to more or less of a complete stop, press the button, then am able to continue on without drawing power.
Is what I have described normal? Ought I be able to switch off my darling lamps while rolling? Does the behavior have anything to do with how I have wired them all up? Should I replace my dynamo hub or perhaps purchase a new headlamp? I will respect your advice if you will share it with me.
best,
Carl J.
Wat
because ive never turned it off, i just learned after that post that i can’t turn off my XS at all!
I’ve never turned my cyo off other than to see if I would notice any difference when I first got it. The whole point of a dyno is for light 24/7
I know exactly where you’re coming from. Fun fact though, with my SON the difference between on and off is quite noticeable. I am much more motivated to switch the light off during the day than I was with a shimano or sp.
On vs off was noticeable on my SP.
Can’t tell with my shimano Alfine. Don’t know model number
Maybe it’s a Shimano thing, no difference on or off.
At what speed? I think that cycling about article from a while ago showed shimano dynamos to be less draggy at low speeds but the SON to be better at higher speeds.
I can’t feel my Shimanos at low speed but def can at high.
My baby SP is the opposite, so it’s perfect on the race-commuter.
I notice a great deal with regard to my shimungo hup hence my desire to turn it off.
re: universal sale on 1.5w shimano boys
whats the official ruling on 1.5w? is it enough non-20" wheels?
yes i am getting v adequate power on a cyo premium with a 1.5w shimano
What’s it worth question
Not sure what to ask for this deadender wheel: SP PL-8X (15x100, Centerlock) hub laced to a WTB KOM i23 27.5” rim, Sapim Race spokes, professionally built (bought from Endpoint).
I’ve debated hanging onto it for if/when I sell the stock day/ruiner fork, but that’s been converted over to 12mm, so no reason to hang onto it other than laziness.
Def not worth anything, I’ll hoard dispose of the hub for you
Did you rebuild 650 with 12mm hub or switch to 700?
Bought an entirely new wheel, 650B around a 12mm Shimano dyno.
The 700C experiment may happen later this year.
Buy a lifetime supply of dyno wire?
https://www.markertek.com/product/48-250/24awg-2-conductor-bulk-unshielded-dc-power-cable-500ft
That place also has the unbalanced microphone wire that Fred recommended. Free shipping if you buy 84 ft, which might also be a lifetime supply depending on how you dither.
