it wouldn't be tarck without a dyno thread

Only skimmed cos it past my bedtime. Just noticed the date. I assume it’s already been discussed.

someone should order a custom bike with a rim dyno mount for us to test this theory

whole lot of caveats at the head of that article. another way to frame it is that if you need lots of available wattage and you’re not riding too fast or slow and you don’t mind noise, modern rim dynos might be a good option.
what i like about hub is that they’re silent and invisible, and aren’t going to get bumped out of place.

I have the velogical one. It’s never been installed because the instructions were panic attack inducing

I just ordered a pre-built bike24 wheel for wife’s hybrid that has a nexus c3000 hub, that should be totally fine right?

Not great nor the worst, but totally fine!

From a strictly rim dynamo perspective, the rim dynamo sounds better better in rim brake uses as the brake pad will essentially sweep the traction surface. I could see a rim dyno on a disc wheel losing traction as it gets dirty, stays dirty and then mars your rim with crud as it rolls along.

oh yeah with the right kind of grit you’ve got an accidental Dremel

Finally, the rim dynamo review that answers the questions that no one was asking!

Looking at the comments, I guess maybe there are a lot of people looking for max power output instead of very reliable light at all speeds.

I scored a free DH-S701 hub so am building up a new wheelset for my commuter/bar bike. (First time building wheels, v excited!) Is the Cyo Premium + Secula Plus still the standard baseline light combo? This will be urban riding only.

So… I’ve been holding out on getting a dynamo setup until Igaro have gotten their shit together, but it seems impossibly far away right now. Or rather, they’re annoyingly close. Anyone have any thoughts or intel on this?

I have no idea what this is

I would suggest a schmidt hub and a B&m lamp for what is basically the best currently available.

I installed a Trelock LS905s at the recommendation of @drwelby. The beam pattern is really spidery with all these rays of light going all over the edge of the light field - is there a way to fix this? Is this typical?

I don’t remember that, but mine is sitting on my work bench to get swapped back in so I’ll be able to double check soon.

Keep that one handy for Halloween.

If you have a rear rack, I like the Toplight Line Plus as well. Also if you don’t mind the extreme drag you can also wire up multiple taillights which I think is a fair trade in the city.

Just put 10 miles on the light and it seemed to improve somewhat over that time. Maybe there’s some burn in time? Maybe I got used to it?

More lights on more bikes. The ditherer is finally getting lit.

Will post this in the 3-d printing group too. Would it be possible to build an under fork dynamo mount via 3-d printing? Would it be strong enough? Is there free software out there that would let me build something? Not used cad since autocad 2.5 running on DOS! Or are there cheaper or AliExpress versions of the stuff below?
