It's Electric! A thread for e-bike things.

I’ve had chain skipping issues the whole time I’ve owned my new-to-me cargo bike. It was fine all winter after I put on a new cog, chainring and chain, then started skipping again. The bike obviously sits outside but I put a motorcycle cover on it religiously. Yesterday, on the advice of a bike mechanic friend, I checked the chain for stiff links. The brand new KMC chain that I put on in November had developed a fair bit of rust. So I took the chain off, doused the thing in Motul spray-on motorcycle chain oil that I have laying around, massaged each link like I was praying the rosary to our saint the Shimano square taper bb, sprayed some more, wiped it thoroughly, put some NFS on and… no skipping. Hooray.

Brakes seem fine though? lol

Gah the B&M IQ-Xe stopped working on my ebike this morning. It still passes power to the tail light, so I assume it’s an issue with the light itself. Anyone have success fixing one of these?

Alternatively - suggestions for decent and affordable headlight that works with a 52v ebike and passes power to a tail light?

This is what I ended up with. Both plugged into super harness.

Yeah I got the toplight line out back. I do need to do another purchase from grin so maybe I just buy their light too

An IQ-XE variant. Pickings are slim for any ebike lights outside of the standard 6-12V.

There’s also this option for the rear which I guess you don’t need.

Not sure you’ll find an ebike light that will pass a lower voltage to a non-ebike rear light.

Yeah I’m using the iq-xe now but it died

Actually I’m sitting here at work thinking I’m a dumbass. My tail light is plugged in separately so I bet my headlight just came unplugged.

Would be worth doing a continuity check between the light and the power source, might just be a break somewhere.

Just noticed that the newer Topline / Line ebike lights are now only rated for 50V max, not the 60V that the older ones were rated.

Yeah when I bought mine the eBay listing said 60v but all the B&M material said 50v. Not sure if they changed anything or what.

Mine was also a combo unit with a really crappy horn

Ok next ebike question - anyone have a decent way to add a USB charger to my ebike for small things like a Wahoo or my phone?

Grin sells a nifty one for a fair price but it comes with a whole phone mount, which I don’t want.

Alright I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on an ebike or ecargo bike.

Sup is going to need the car daily for radiation/appointments/infusions/etc and the bus is killing my will to live so I’m looking for an appliance to commute on and haul groceries with.

I’m on a modest budget though; medical bills are piling up fast and we have even bigger ones coming in soon and our savings is drying up fast, so I’m probably gonna list my DJ and my Evasion for sale this weekend, maybe the Jeffsy too, and see what comes of that. So no R+M Load 75 for me. What are my options for an ebike that rides like a normal bike and is easy to find in real shops? Dew-E? Specialized Vado? Bonus points if I can put a Clydesdale fork on it.

One of the neighborhood Biker Boyz got one of these things and it went on its inaugural bar journey tonight:

I did not look at it super close but I was very impressed with its HOSS BIKE qualities for the money. Probably not super helpful but for $1600 it seems pretty solid

How about an e-Hooligan (minus the Lefty pokes)?

Yeah don’t count he R&M out yet. I’ve seen fantastic prices on Upway.

Yeah Upway is a great place to buy from and they seem to have a pretty reasonable return policy (mind the mileage limits for that tho). Some brands/models go more quickly, so you might have to watch their site or setup an alert if you’re looking for something specific.

I don’t really have any recs myself other than testing riding some stuff and buying what you like that has some dealer support in the area. The rest of the bike is usually regular bike parts, but whatever drive system will probably require a trip to a dealer for servicing. I believe Bosch has committed to have spares available for 7 years. Not sure about any of the others.

I’m turning into a bit of a Tern fanboy because I really like the Quick Haul (D8) more than either Bennos I’ve had. Handles and rides better, lots of accessories available, not huge or heavy, easy to maneuver through doors/elevators. Only real downside so far is that the little wheels make it a little less stable if you’ve only got on hand on the bars for stuff like signalling turns when it’s bumpy. Handles totally fine other than that. The Active Line Plus motor seems fine even though it’s down on torque compared to the rest. I put a slightly bigger cassette on mine for one dumb steep ass hill and haven’t even really needed to use the lowest gear so far.

You still got the Benno Boost? That still seems like a reasonably sized longtail that could be a decent daily rider
