It's Electric! A thread for e-bike things.

I’m constantly kicking myself for not getting one when they were being blown out. I was emailing the owner once a year for like 5 years asking if I could stock them and he always said they’re not ready. Shame to see them go.

I’d been vacillating on smol-e-cargo for the last few months. looking at monopole, omnium mini/minimax, tern P9 etc. Only got linked to this today and instead of turbo dithering I made a decision in a couple hours and just bought it as I can’t see anything touching that price for the spec, and I like the large front basket or platform setup.

Going through this too. The Bullitt is too big for me to make use of and store. Besides your list I’m also looking at Yoonit and Muli, but I’m not a fan of the tiny wheels on any of the bikes in that class.

The 16/18" wheels on those two seem a bridge too far!

Anyway, review incoming in a couple weeks on the Loden.

Seen about five Omniums - both the cargo and mini-cargo - recently. They look huge to me online, but in person, they’re almost reasonable.

Rode by a Muli cycle yesterday. The tiny wheels front and back make it look like a toy in person!

And, even knowing the storage ‘bucket’ is, like, 10x the capability of the Wald 137 on my city bike now, it looks so under-sized compared to the Omnium deck.

HY, really curious to hear your opinions about it when you’ve formed some. I came close to buying one a few years back.

If you name your company Also all of the articles about it will be unintelligible

Delivered yesterday, assembled last night. Off on sup’s commute this morning.

One tiny chip on the fork where the rack hoop was sitting in shipment position and one stripped bolt on the frame lock otherwise all ok.

Spanner checked everything while building and only found a couple of undertorqed bolts. Gates belt frequency was in spec according to their app.

I’ve only taken it quickly around the block but even up a very steep street it went well. Drive motor/5sp nexus/gates belt all feels good.

175mm cranks just clash on the kickstand, so can’t pedal/backpedal with it deployed.

Comes with the slow 1.8A charger which is a non issue for overnight top ups, 12hrs or so from empty.

Abus frame lock is keyed alike to the battery lock. Have a plug in chain in the mail.

Rear rack is very ortlieb unfriendly, the stays are so chonky and the angle and brace placement makes it nearly impossible to get the hook to catch well. I flipped the pannier hook rail 180 and it kind of works.

Basket seems like the best carrying option currently, might try the platform out soon.

Pairs to the etube ride app but i haven’t tried it while riding.

The satori stem has massive stack, it’s “slammed” but still pretty high, but the position suits the bike. The QR adjust also allows raising and turning the bars 90° to the wheel for storage.

Will add mudflaps for better coverage and make some Kevin Fenderline adjustments and am considering a lever dropper for easy sharing.

Very happy with the bang per buck.

Possibly the nicest thing - the seller also handles the australia post ebikes, and when I was looking at their website I noticed a photo of a ‘shovel’ front rack that was designed by framebuilder Ewen Gellie during his internship at the Southcott factory where the bikes used to be built. This rack dropped the weight hugely compared to the old tubular basket style while also increasing the carrying capacity.
Ewen passed suddenly a few years ago from suspected heart failure, he was a super talented engineer and framebuilder. Think PVD but talented and not a dickhead.
I mentioned Ewen and the rack when I emailed about purchasing the bike - they had never met Ewen. After shipping the bike I received an email saying there was a small gift in the shipment for me as well.

I opened up the front rack box to find an original Gellie shovel rack nested inside. Ready for pride of place in the workshop wall

Family ebike show and tell last night in our neighborhood organized by a neighbor. Great turnout, no advertising or anything just word of mouth.

Tomorrow is the city wide “family bike fest” with events and vendors etc. It’s huge. Hoping to go too.

20/16" wheeled mini cargo!

I hear Xtracycle is remaking the swoop from the ground up and it’s going to have a 24” front wheel and suspension and not be backwards comparable with new ecosystem of accessories.

I’m eternally disappointed.

Sigh: Also TM-B Ebike: Specs, Release Date, Price, and Features | WIRED

The word proprietary is used so many times. Future e-waste here we come

there are parts of it i like but it’s mostly bemusement

The battery that’s charged over USB-C and works as a power bank when removed is great.

Regen braking and ABS on the front hydraulic brake is pretty cool.

I want that 120mm inverted susp fork for 24" wheels for… reasons.

“Pedal by wire” this is just a small electric motorcycle with extra steps. I’m really curious how the “pedaling feel” is - all the early reviewers are tech people, not bike people. Can I stand on the pedal to get going at a stoplight, or are you just expected to use the thumb throttle? “oh the pedals will just spin when the power is off, that makes it theft-proof” nah they’ll just chuck it in the back of a u-haul and strip it for parts.

The quick-swap seatmast (“top frame”) is college design student idiocy that never should have made it off the drawing board.

“Oh you want to stick a rear rack on? fuck you, you can’t just bolt one on, you need to buy an entirely new top frame.” Big lmao that they couldn’t figure out a way to make it height-adjustable so there’s still a normal seatpost sticking out.

what i really hate is their “pedal” “”“assist”“” quad that is “bike lane legal”

These things already exist, I watched a GCN video about them the other day. SHARTMO they’re great for last mile delivery but in no way are they a bike.

Cool but overengineered, I look forward to seeing the rich local teens riding them

Once in a while you need a very well funded company to foolishly invest a ton of money into advancing the tech so all the other companies benefit from the trickle down

My ears perked up lol. Surely we can locate the factory in China responsible for this.

This is a Class 3 ebike with assistance up to 28 mph, so it does have a throttle

No that’s not a class 3 bike and might make it not street legal in some (most?) places.

Even their linked article explaining the three classes is wrong

In some instances, Class 1 bikes also have a handlegrip-based or thumb-activated throttle

That makes it a class 2.
