This thread should be on bikeforums.
I’m more on the fence about it, because I agree with everything said above. Generally, I want the option of being able to easily jump off the bike when it bails.
i rode in the snow last year. it only got down around 25 or so here though. i just used some tech wool socks and specialized toe covers over doms & atacs.
GTFO California.
^Indeed.
Unless you got some gaping vents going on, I don’t see why clipless MTB shoes would be much different from whatever else you might be wearing, but then again I’ve never been one to alter my shoe choice so much as my sock choice in the winter. For me, getting ice in my cleats was a bigger problem than getting cold toes (at least, any colder than they’d normally be anyways).
I’m doing wool socks + Pearl Izumi MTB shoes and fleece lined neoprene MTB shoe covers + ATACs this winter for CX. I figure I can just change into boots after the race if my toes go numb.
i just found out that my old affinity frame will fit 40c tires. hopefully it’s straight enough to ride. keeping tarck alive through the winter.

Thanks for all the advice, i’m gonna go for a 19-20t cog depending on what deal i find
what do you guys think of this one?
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-19-t-19T-1-8-Pista-Track-Cog-Sprocket-fixed-gear_W0QQitemZ260482603718QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ca5f91ac6&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_500wt_1182
the shipping is $11 so i can probably get it for the $1
I would avoid sketchy cogs, as they tend to have poorly machined threads that destroy precious track hubs. Go with an EAI or Surly, it’s worth it.
Unfortunately cogs have risen considerably in the past year, and moneys been tight, so I have to choose between these two. So would you guys recommend an eighthinch cog or an origin8 cog
unless you guys got any better deals that I haven’t found yet

Just ordered some real fender. My first pair.

The Origin8 cog looks like the same one Soma sells. I haven’t heard anything bad or good about them, but they look to be decent.
The Eighthinch cog is definitely the exact same one IRO sells. I’ve used several of those with success. The threads are quality, but they’re not polished, which is probably why they’re cheaper.
This year I’m using Dewalt work gloves. Paid $15 after Ace hardware coupon.
They’re warm enough so far but the palm has a chunky gel insert,
which might be a perk at some point.
in past years I’ve used Grenade snowboard spring/pipe gloves. they worked aight but I lose gloves and those aren’t affordable to me.
Anyone have recommendations?

So then would you say then that I should try out the origins for $5 less? or are the eighthinch/iro cogs worth the extra money
I can vouch for the quality of the Eightinch cog (I actually would have recommended them but IRO only carries up to 18t and I didn’t know they were available in larger sizes), and the Origin8 cog seems decent to me (You may want to look for reviews). That’s what I’m saying.
i picked up a pair of specialized neoprene gloves off of the deep discount rack. i’m hoping those plus these wool thinsulate foldover mittens will beat the weather up to the point when it hurts to breath, then i’ll probably take the train.

Sounds like you’ve got a good plan if you’re apt to lose stuff. I likes my PI Lobsters for supa cold and Gore Mistrals for sorta cold, but I’m pretty good at making sure I don’t lose 'em.
tj maxx is your best friend for winter gear. i went there yesterday and had a hard time not buying stuff that i didn’t really need: marmot/smart wool baselayers, any number of goretex gloves, mountain hardware/marmot caps, patagonia soft shells, tons of rad wool socks, etc…all for ATLEAST half off retail.
That’s news to me, last I went there it was mostly clothing for street rats and bros.

no way, tj maxx rules so hard, but it depends which one you go to. city shops tend to cater to that audience, but i’ve found some great deals back home in the 'burbs. $20 ben sherman jacket, $2 wool hats. it rules so hard.
I’m going to the burbs. In Portland, there’s US Outdoor Store which has a clearance annex. 40-70% off the brands you mentioned and general goretex lined outerwear.
