Not sure I understand setting your spds to the lowest possible tension. When shit is getting technical, that’s the last place you want to be accidentally popping out of your pedals. You might as well just be running a good shoe/platform setup at that point.
I won’t let myself joke about shitty pedals. fuck anything resin, you want metal, you want pins. don’t fuck up or your shin will pay. that’s just how flat pedals are. wear jeans. hell, shin pads if you’re really a delicate flower (well, actually highly recommended if you’re using a real shinburger pair of pedals)

thin-ish, alloy, removable pins preferred so you can replace messed up pins or change height. plus the grip.
I’m gonna go ahead and disagree and say you should get the deity compound petals. Plastic body, metal pins. Cheap, relatively light, and durable enough
getting to wear bro shoes might be the best part of mtncycling
Flat pedals at Sandy Ridge is the fucking worst. That climb will have you regretting it for the first 45 minutes of your day
Of course, then you get to the rock gardens and keep stepping off cuz newb and pedal strike and whatnot and you are all “hell yeah flat pedals”
Yeah… I can endure that climb for the ease of dabbing a foot with flat pedals. I haven’t ridden the top of Sandy Ridge enough to remember the trail particulars yet. Also, sessioning the jump section on Rock Drop is so much more fun with flats.
5.10s and flats is a great combo if you’re living the fuck uphills, wear flannel life.
best life
im down with pendletons and vans slip ons
flat brim and monster energy drink can gtfo tho
I think I’m going to agree about using flat pedals to start. Probably ought to stick with 'em until you decide that pedaling up hill on flats is just too fucking annoying.

I got a pair of these just for general chilling and they have been surprisingly good with platforms:

But the Teva Crank Mid is still my favorite. Not as grippy as a five ten, but my feet never slip, traction in the wet is good (as you might expect from Teva rubber) and they are actually super comfortable to wear, not terrible for when you need to hike and they look good (unlike a five ten). They were recently discontinued so I need to snatch up as many as possible before I can’t find them anymore.
Truth, oh so fun.
Also that skill test into Two Turntables can be a bitch if clip ins if you dont see the line. Saw a dude last summer do a major endo and not clip out and just roll and roll and roll down the trail.
Mig I hope you don’t think he’s kidding. Or I do hope you think he’s kidding. Either way, he’s not kidding.
