He’s pretty special.

It’s a cautionary tale.
Just posting to say that the existence of 15mm is stupid as fuck and I’m still bitter about this.
does this look like pinkbike to you?
damn beady-eyed canadians
lots of new posts!
back to unexcite

I’m sorry, I really don’t understand
Currently I’m 9mm QR, changing to 15TA is a bad thing?
Going from a QR to the 15mm through axle standard will be a good move for you. The rest of that was just chatter better suited for the mtb thread.
What else is bothering you Mig?

15 is better than 9. I’m on a couple qr forks and havent died yet.
20 is a good bit stiffer without much weight penalty, so the aches have stemmed from rockshox switching to 15 in an effort to stay current with fox/shimano marketing without offering much benefit weight wise.
Unless I’ve misread what size rocks and drops you’re hitting, axle probably won’t make a huge difference, but maxle will help resale eventually at the very least

How long are you gonna bitch about this for?

Probably another 6-7 years at which time Fox or RS are gonna come out and offer an “oversize Through Axle system in 20mm for trail and cross country riders that offers significant gains in stiffness with trivial weight gains and no other downsides” and it becomes the new standard backed up with assloads of marketing like it’s a new thing that didn’t already exist before the manufacturers collectively went retarded. They can even market it like some sort of adaptation to the bigger wheel sizes “15mm was fine when everyone rode 26 inch tires, but now with 650B as the standard riders are asking for greater stiffness at the axle to deal with the increased lateral forces they’re putting on these tires. That’s why FOX came out with this cutting edge 20mm system blah blah blah”.
If I were to ballpark a timeframe, anyhow.
you’re not wrong
but selling the opposite of whatever the pinkbike commenters want is a reliable way to make money in this business
Plat pedals or clip ins? Why?
If I get plat pedals do I have to wear skate shoes and a flatbrim?
Depends on the bike, which you should post a photo of.
5.10s and flats is a great combo if you’re living the fuck uphills, wear flannel life.
that said I’m on spds on all my bikes now, with the release tension set low so i can unclip at odd angles when i feel like i’m gonna crash. but it definitely depends on what trails you’re riding. and there’s value to riding with platforms since I think it helps you figure out your weighting (since your feet will slip off if you fuck it up)
Both.
You want this style, not BMX, of platform and you want it on there at the start. You are going to hate getting started from a standstill less using these when you dab and stop continuously. They also let you separate from the bike completely with no issues. Chances are you can get a pair of these free with the bike and have one hell of riot destroying them.

Once you have some balance and a rough idea how to eat shit throw on some SPD’s with the tension low as it goes.
None of this applies to riding a fire road or copping out on actually mountain biking.
Post the damn bike already and get the party started
I won’t let myself joke about shitty pedals. fuck anything resin, you want metal, you want pins. don’t fuck up or your shin will pay. that’s just how flat pedals are. wear jeans. hell, shin pads if you’re really a delicate flower (well, actually highly recommended if you’re using a real shinburger pair of pedals)

thin-ish, alloy, removable pins preferred so you can replace messed up pins or change height. plus the grip.
To be clear I’m talking about baby steps at a slow pace on the first day. You know, easy while he susses the whole thing out and plays around. I know this is going to sound heretic but nobody is going to fault him for taking off in a pair of tennis shoes down a hobo trail for the first ride.
Gnar shreddage isn’t something I think he should be peer pressured into attempting right now. There are plenty of good safe easy trails to sort himself out on his still unspecified fopmobile.
true
my first time really riding a mountain bike was a shop trip to downieville. I wore lycra and running shoes on an old giant glory dh bike.
so sketchy, but it worked.
Post your bike today or I ban you.
