I threw caution to the wind and went straight to 25 PSI. Two inches of rock hard contact patch. The self-steer vanished, and I did my 10 mile commute. I could feel every rock and stick in the road, ricocheting into my sit bones. A road bike that hasn’t slept in 72 hours, and is also drunk. MTB singlespeed gearing and 32 pounds of steel and rubber. I biked miserably up the hills, and then rolled begrudgingly down the other side with only a meager increase in speed. I hopped a curb, and the bike bounced on the other side like a basketball.
At the end of the ride, I put the bike away, walked inside, and caught my reflection in the mirror. I paused. I looked deep into my own eyes, and said to myself,
What the fuck am I doing right now
I made my bike completely joyless. It’s a nothing-bike now. It’s like a black hole of neutrality. It’s a $2000 wal-mart Mongoose.

I see so many idiots riding fat bikes around here with tires pumped up to 20+ psi and it makes me so upset that those idiots are riding around town year round with rock hard tires.
