Mr. Dilthey's own thread for posting jackass bikes that he likes.
Fuck Max… sell all your bikes and just go buy whatever Tiagra spec yolo bike LBS is slinging.

You need to start over
I actually agree with you more than I’d like to admit.

I had similar feels but was much less successful. I sold every single frame and part that I owned. 1 bike now

Max I’ve followed your blog for a few years and I think you’re being too hard on yourself. You are doing better than I am, I’m sure

The limiting factor is always money. The real skill I see here on tarck is people buying the right parts, the first time. That is the ultimate challenge. If you don’t get to touch bike parts in a shop all day you’re gonna fuck up a lot

Thanks, actually, that’s nice to hear. I agree with all points. I upgraded my hubs on my Pugsley and got the bug, and then decided I wanted a “real” cross bike to go with my “real” (lol) mountain bike. So I bought into the Nature Boy and the sizing was off, so that failed.

Then I went digging for a singlespeed compatible frame and settled on the Crockett because, shopbro deal and great dropouts. But every time I see virtually any other steel bike I’m jealous.

Idk, I love that I can throw two racks on my Pugsley and haul a ton of shit. I love baskets. It’s fun to have a fast race bike like the Crockett as a daily driver, but I know in my heart that I’d be happier with a Wolverine. But here we are. Not gonna try to swap again and have no fast bike for two months. Especially since I’d need to convert my hubs for any steel frame.

I’m done. It’s good enough. It’s a fun bike, I enjoy it, I don’t need to endlessly dither with it anymore. I’ll honestly probably have it for a while (knock on wood) out of laziness.

The crockett I owned for a few years rode as good or better than any steel bike I owned, which leads me to believe you’re basing your preference for a wolverine entirely on aesthetics, rather than ride quality. Keep it a while, you will learn to love it.

You’re over thinking it. It’s a modern alloy bike from a big brand. It’s great.

Fuck steel, modern aluminum is so fucking great. My dream spencer would probably be a SmartWeld low-trail fopchariot.

The Crockett is as cool as a frame as that kind of frame gets. Get a proper drivetrain (fwiw I 100% support SS’ing)and maybe an H/G fork and you’re in the club my friend.

No, I know, it’s 100% rack mounts. I love the ride and it fits great, I just have a hard time carrying shit. Might do a HG fork though.

You should absolutely do a HG fork

rack struts are pretty jackass on this

Max is there a particular reason why you haven’t bought a used steamroller frame and built it up into a sw8 partsbin fixxxay yet? I require this of you, due date is March.

what size tires can a steamroller clear? asking for a friend. definitely not planning on another track bike. nope.

EDIT: just looked it up, only 38.

These are 35c Nomads, I feel like you could get bigger than a 38 in there

edit: here’s a pic I stole of someone who managed to get 42s in there.

nobrakes

now that is a dumb bike.

I kinda want to ride it.

Can confirm steamroller can fit a 42 maybe more without brakes. 38 is probably the max with the right brake, I think black mountain cycles has a blog post about what calipers fit the biggest tire under em. I’ve wanted to go 650b/42 and fenders on mine but who’s got that money? Not me.

I have some Phil wood fixed hubs you want to buy

I don’t even know why I asked. That photo reminded me of when my friend put 44s on his steamroller and spent the day cutting the side knobbies down so it could clear that stays.

Also Nomads on a steamroller is so 2012 tarck.
