nerdy and dull bike plans/dithering thrad 2016

likely stuff:

  • Need to swap rims on the rear of the trek because the current rim has a bad flatspot – luckily I can use the old front wheel and just transfer the rim over the lazy way.
-Might try to tubeless my compass tires.
-Get new knobby tires, the biggest that will fit on the pomp – hopefully WTB nano’s.

less likely stuff due to $$$

  • Would like 2nd dyno wheel.
  • supple 650b the track bike

Kind of want to pare things down/reshuffle drastically right at the moment.

I should really start by letting go of some of my parts clutter first and see how that feels.

build two low trail 1" forks, one for my basketbike bridgestone to shake out the bugs in the process, the second for the Expedition

draw up this rack design that uses 6 nonplanar bends in one tube

get rid of some bikes and shit

Really I just want to stick a lowrider rack on my 29+ bike and ride that to work more often.

I’m also waiting for the Selle Anatomica on my LHT to explode though, so replacing that may become a priority before too long.
I’m hacking together new 80mm aluminum fenders for my Elephant, and switching from rando bag to basket life
another randobagger bites the dust

pls to report on the fenders, I gotta find something good because these VO fenders are definitely not gonna work with Switchback Hills

I love the way donger’s Honjos look but 1) expensive and 2) I would want to get em anodized black

Are any of the Planet Bike ALX jobbies out in the wild yet? That’s giong to be my next experiment, as they don’t ahve exactly what I want, but close enough that I think a tiny bit 'o massaging will make them perfect fit. Well, that and doing somethign else for stays.

I have some of the medium-sized 700C ALX fenders, and they’re a step above the composite jobbers.

Good to hear, super interested in the wide 650b option, that might be my next effort. I just wanna fondle a pair first to get a true idea of the width.

The ALX fenders are sold out basically everywhere, but, for some reason, BTI has a bunch of the 27.bs in stock. I’m actually going to order a pair for the Elephant soon.

I installed a set for a friend’s teenage son on his entry-level 27.5 commuter (after haranguing Recycled into replacing the broken axle in the freewheel hub that they’d repeatedly missed when she brought it in)

fenderline was perfect out of the package, they’re stiff, and fit over SB8s

but they’re heavy even without the hardware, hard to quiet, and short

I still prefer their plastic 29er fenders, which actually work better under tension for 650b than they do on as intended. They’re not composite like SKS, but pure ABS? plastic that’s much thicker along the centerline.

Thanks for the report. How are the blades weight-wise compared to those Electra Balloons?

My issue is finding a fender that is at least 65mm wide, but not wider than 75, that will fit over a 559x60 tire.

All the usual suspects’ 60mm fenders are too narrow. So I’m looking at the 65mm SKS P65.

Or re-radiusing a set of 700x63 V-O fenders.

Or re-radiusing a set of the PB ALX 27.5 x 60mm fenders.

Or re-radiusing a set of the PB ALX 29 x 65mm fenders. My worry is that they would end up too wide to fit in my frame (like those Electra balloon fenders).
http://ecom1.planetbike.com/ALX29Medium.html

This is some serious dithering. The SKS P65s are the obvious answer, but they are plastic and short.

I’m guessing the V-Os are the only ones that are long-ish to begin with, but they are silver. I like the idea of re-radiusing the ALX too because that would give them a bit more length in addition to width, bonus is they are black to begin with, which is what I want in this case.

Either way I have a bit of time as the bike these are for is frameset only at this point.

P.S. PB’s plastic 29er fenders are polycarbonate.

I installed them a while ago and forgot to post about it so I don’t have a direct comparison to the Electras but the ALX fenders are very thick aluminum, felt as stiff as stainless fenders

looking at custom stays I was just realizing that the approach used by the Big O ham fenders should be pretty great

could get some 0.125" x 0.5" flat bar for cheap, bend it around pvc pipe, and drill holes in it for direct mounting instead of fussing with hardware

once mine are replaced do you want my intact front for 26" experimentation?

I have a set but thanks for the offer.

Fucking fender chat again.

Rear dynamo light mount by Andrew, on Flickr
O wow

THanks for this #bicyclesecret! I finally know what the f to do with that rack dynamo light and Cyo mount.

I’m so glad to have contributed to the canon of tarck.secrets!

Maybe I should say fuck camping on the single speed and do it on this

With a smaller chainring and some knobby tires I think it could be alright.
Thoughts?

Get some pedals that aren’t total bullshit first.

Ideally clipless, but if you insist on platforms get something with metal pins.

Bike is rad tho. I endorse ideas that will allow you more time on it.

Thanks man
New pedals have been on the list of upgrades regardless. Just trying to convince myself that I don’t need a new bike to do what I want and that I should just do what I can to make the bikes I do have work
