Why would anybody create a new derailleur, when there are already many out there that work very well? The answer is simple: Because we want a different derailleur. For lack of a better word, modern derailleurs are digital: You push a button, and they shift. That’s why the best derailleurs use electric motors, which are more consistent than a human pushing a lever that pulls a cable. Modern electronic derailleurs are very, very good, and yet…
Because different and they weren’t happy with good shifting performance.
This whole thing is a treatise on why we should all be using robot shifting:
I don’t really have a problem with it either, I just think it’s funny that there’s like always a picture of Jan on his bike riding hard. Not anyone else lol.
That’s what I was thinking. Heck of a lot of dithering to be done there if money isn’t too much of an object and you’re into dithering with # of gears for some reason.
Having read the prose, if it works as advertised, then yeah.
The shifter is even uglier than the mech, but if you have a retrogrouchmobile all thin tubes that planes, and a burning desire for downtube shifters, then this thing will ostensibly give you an indexed 11 or 12 speed drivetrain that shifts really nicely. I don’t see the one bong price tag being an issue for any that fits that demographic.
I can imagine the whole retrogrouchmobile running around $10k or thereabouts and in this modern world of >$10k bikes, I don’t think one needs to be quite “insanely wealthy” more like a person of reasonable means with poor judgement.
No, my comment wasn’t that anyone needed to be insanely wealthy to purchase it, just that I would need to be at a net worth where I was lighting my Chihuly bong with $100 bills before I would consider such a purchase.
I think no matter how wealthy I was, I’d just get dura ace or whatever. This is for a person who wants something special and different. Tbh if I was mega wealthy I’d probably still just go with 105 cause I’m a sicko.
This. I’d have the bike I already have, I suppose. The real question is how well off I have to become such that I could manage to just buy a bike rather than dither something together.
Shimano mechs all come with plastic pulleys which are quieter, lighter, and better functioning than aluminum pulleys, which where extraordinarily quickly. I’m speculating that in this case, they may work just fine.
yeah but they also don’t have tons of tiny microshelves to collect dirt and lube, nor layers to potentially separate with lateral force. might be gentler on this than a typical RD but i’d think you’d want to do resin here. idk much about resin printing though.
I’m not going to defend this exactly, but if you’re the business guy it makes sense to do this because you don’t have to license your own image. See Mint mobile.
