like, you COULD stick the cable spool on on a lead screw so that it moves fore and aft as it turns, wrapping the cable in a spiral so you can get more than one turn of the cable spool and pull more cable in a small-diameter package… but we’re getting into some rube-goldbergian mechanisms and indexing shifters are complicated enough inside already.

For Cues they might move the shifter back to the lever like they used to since that gives you lots of room. You can also use that space for cruder mechanisms like stamped ratchet plates.

oh like where the 9-speed STI shift mechanism was? Yeah I suppose you could stick a large diameter cable spool in a weird bulb up there that wouldn’t interfere with the hands. It’d be tough to do under-the-hood shift cables with the shift mechanism on the lever instead of in the body, but maybe they’ll try to sell exterior cables as a “less prone to fraying/easier for shops to work on” feature at the CUES level.
What we should be applauding Shimano for is actually making cable 12 speed, because sram sure ain’t

That was the biggest complaint about the 1st generation of 11s hydro shakes.
After ~5 years on the RS505, I kinda prefer the larger body. Free aero bars!

Sram can fit 11,12 and 13 speeds in their old 10 speed hoods via Ratio ratchet-ways. And its serviceable.

That’s because all the cable pull magic is at the ass-end of the system with its cable “ear”.
I suspect this is the one place where Sram has some patent protection that is truly useful.
Too bad they won’t use it to make a mech 12 speed drop bar setup at the OE level.

yes - with short cable pull. Note that none of their kits lets you use a SRAM 12-speed MTB rear derailleur without also modifying the rear derailleur to a shorter cable pull. They’d probably love it if they didn’t have to do this, but there just isn’t enough room in the mechanism for 11 longer X-Actuation™ cable pulls, only 11 shorter Exact-Actuation™ cable pulls.
