New & Interesting Bike Campenaerts

Entirely a guess, but I think James H. was just burned out after dealing with pandemic, the demise of CyclingTips, then working his butt off to anchor the tech stuff on Escape as they started out.

They’ve added more content and people and seem to have a sustainable plan, and I haven’t seen any other signs of imminent demise yet :person_shrugging:

swap mtb endcaps?

are there actually any dimensional differences between the “road” and “MTB” hub bodies? They don’t seem to publish any dimensioned drawings, but their spoke calculator reports exactly the same flange dimensions/spacing for both the road and MTB versions of the 350/j-bend/centerlock/142mm hubs, for instance… Annoying that they won’t sell you a hub pre-configured that way but I think there’s nothing stopping you from buying the “MTB” 32-spoke hub and swapping for the HG-Road11 or XDR freehub body that you need.

  1. Unless you want super fast engagement and run boost the answer is always 350

Just put a 350 on the rear of my custom road bike and it’s great.

Can always throw 54t ratchets in for fast, but not superfast engagement. Has made a noticeable upgrade to my 350

I’ve been wondering that myself, not quite enough to actually research it so that’s good to know about the similar dimensions. That probably stays true as long as the non-boost hubs are still available

Annoying and more expensive having to pay an additional $80-ish for the freehub body or almost $50 for front endcaps like @karl_dandleton mentioned if you’re buying retail.

Still, it’s good to have options. It was nice converting a front 350 15x100 road hub to 12x100 with minimal effort.

This is how I am reading it too.

So I was clicking on their site and noticed that. But I can’t tell the difference between road and mountain 350 hubs (disc brake thru axle)

How safe is this? Y’all not gonna hack into my main-frame ?

as far as I can tell it’s just “which freehubs they’ll sell it to you with”. The “road” hubs are only available with Shimano HG-Road11 or SRAM XDR freehub bodies, the “mtb” hubs are only available with Shimano HG 8/9/10/MTB-11, Microspline, or SRAM XD freehub bodies.

I don’t think there’s anything stopping you from buying a 32H “MTB” 350 and swapping an HG-road11 freehub body on it, but it’ll cost you more money than buying it the way you needed it in the first place, and now you’ve got an extra freehub body kicking around the back of your spare parts hoard forever.

I have done exactly that swap before

I have also just dremeled the base nubs shorter on the MTB 10s HG freehub body which produces the same result

Yeah my only 11s are 11-34 so they fit on the smaller freehubs. I never thought about it but does that affect chainline at all?

I bought “DT 350 road disc hub” in 2018 with 142mm spacing. If I buy a MS freehub body, and want to run 12sp GRX, do I need to re-dish? Am not clear if DT makes the adjustments amongst freehub body width with the end cap width or the flange position.

No problem at all. I have a few different wheels I swap on my Coffee Grinder. Two have HG10 freehubs with Shimano GRX cassettes and one has a HGR11 with an Edco cassette. I barely have to tweak the barrel adjuster when switching.

do want.

I know there’s a lot of love for 350s, but I like 240 EXP because they’re quieter.

My favorite sounding hub is a loud, loping 240 I pulled out of a 26" mtb wheelset.

unless you are @chazzwazzer and you send your spare freehub to me!

but… also i have an extra xd driver freehub because i switched from shimano to SRAM, so i have all the types - xd, HG 8/9/10/MTB-11, and microspline.

gotta catch em all
