NJS racing in America

Then again, even if you’re “hooked up” by Zipp, you’re still paying $1200 for a set of wheels.
ill take that “hook up”

everything but having sex.

Call Zipp. I know more than a handful of people who just rang them up and said “I’m a struggling racer, what kind of deal can you give me,” and they got the $1200 deal.

You think WE’RE ripping people off?

no.

should i?

Hopkins is doing nowhere near as well on the kazane as he was last year on the LG. Not that that’s the bikes fault but he doesn’t “kill them all” by a long shot. Really though by far the main handicap with njs would be 36spoke low profile rims.
no.

no…i was about to unleash internet fury on your ass and post a pic of a bear or something.

i’ve seen some fast motherfuckers on pieces of shit @ the san diego velodrome races (usually, not an uber-serious track). i think the concept behind NJS is a little overkill unless you’re dealing with gambling yakuza.

though, it would make for a nice looking field.

Where is the overkill?

overkill as in too strict a ruleset for amateur racing.

amateurs hate fun.
they’d rather buy disc wheels.

I don’t see where the fun is?

How is it fun to have to scrounge to find race legal parts to end up with a bike that’s not going to be as fun to ride?
Most of the outdated shit that njs requires just isn’t that great to ride with slotted cleats, threadless, stiffer bb/cranks, inappropriate saddles, steel bars, grips but doesn’t really make anyone that much slower.

If you want to level the playing field just disallow wheels with rims deeper than 30mm or fewer than 28 spokes. Everyone will be able to race with what they already own but equipment advantages will be minimal.

I guess its more of vintage sort of class now that you say that.

If you dont think it would be fun then no one else probably would either.

Seriously though…you actually think people have to “scrounge” to find NJS parts nowadays?
Theyre so fucking trendy on the tarck scene that you buy them from just about any online shop that sells other track parts.
And I never said a lot of the NJS parts werent inferior compared to modern designs. No one thinks that dutret.

that’s a lot harder/more expensive than riding what you already have or anything that’s nice and you can get a deal on. And even if you can get pedals, cranks, bars and stems other stuff like tires and rims probably isn’t so easy.

And if the whole point of restrictions is to prevent cost wars why would eliminate not only concepts, ftps, felts, dolans etc all of which are significantly cheaper than building an all njs bike but also the entry level bikes that actually make sense for people who can’t afford aero wheels.

My point wasn’t just that njs was inferior but it is so in a way which(with the exception of wheels) doesn’t make you much slower but makes riding a lot less fun.

i think the whole point that everyone is missing here is that NJS standards aren’t for the riders. if they had the choice, they’d be riding the same shit that every other elite rider the world over is riding. the standards are for the benefit of the bettors.

Actually, you’re wrong there. The standards ARE for the racers too.

The racers in Japan make a living racing so if other racers (some are actually millionaires) rode the most badass carbon frame and wheels available and all another guy could afford was a Bridgestone steel and some Araya Golds, I dont think the poorer riders would feel things were fair as they would be if things were say, all NJS.

good point. hadn’t thought of that.
