I’m trying to recommend to my dad a road bike he can occasionally tour on. Anyone spot anything wrong with this diamonback for that?

It’s got rear rack mounts and fork mounts, is what drew me to recommending. He is a roadie and tires larger than 28 scare him, but I’m trying to tell him the 30/32 Roubaixs will be fine.

without seeing it in person, i’m a fan of the kona libre if only because purple is the best color for a bike

http://konaworld.com/libre.cfm

but I guess if 700x28 is on the supple side for him, then 650b life is not going to happen

There’s a model of the Rove that comes with 700x35, too.

The Norco Section also looks good. The max tire clearance is 35, though.

If it’s just the tire size, what’s stopping him from putting Nomads or some other nominally 28mm tires under the thing?

All the space above the tire would look dumb? it would drop the bb another 4mm more than intended? idk, sure he could put 28s on.

Norco does not have rack mounts. I like the purple Kona, but my dad ain’t that guy.

Naa, it’d be fine. And there are plenty of machines with a 70mm BB drop that run with smaller 700c (and 650b, if you look at some of my machines) tires w/o problems.

If your pop frets about the space above the tires and doesn’t want anything bigger than 28s, well, that’s the space for fenders when touring.

So my friend wants to buy this:

Its within their budget. Suggestions for alternatives? That 7 speed freewheel makes me shudder.

Marin Fairfax 1 if it’s available in the upside down. Basically same spec but cassette wheel. Also $100 cheaper.

The Fairfax 2 is like $50 more than that Trek but has Tekro hydro brakes and 8sp.

A used bike one level nicer would be preferable. That’s literally the cheapest hybrid trek makes. Can’t say I’d advise it.

No one deserves a 7 speed freewheel in this day and age.

Agree, don’t touch a multispeed freewheel @Eddbread

That’s a funny way of spelling “kona dew”

are we still set on Kona Dews? what other options are out there?
sup hates bike, bike never fits, bike never works
sup has never had a proper bike
so we’re gonna go shop shoppin’ and let her talk to folx and test ride
and i stay away until its time to pay.

my preferred shop sells konas so we’ll start there, because i do think she’ll like it
but anything else we should look out for?
