Please Tarck, I implore you, help me make all my bike decisions

Having enough space for the bars touching the wall is really the only way to do the hinge rack. Otherwise, it just stacks up like in the first Velociraxx pic.

I used some hinged hooks from Feedback, but it was marginal gains.

yeah, the only appeal for me was thinking it might make it easier to get a bike out of the middle if you can sort of part the waters and move bikes to the side?
but maybe not worth the extra hassle.

there’s a little storage room off the garage, but certain it’s not big enough for 10 bikes to hang in a row, so we might end up with like two rows of bike hanging areas anyway.

I think I understand what you’re trying to avoid. With my ceiling hook rail setup, the bikes can slide into eachother, and if you’ve not leveled the rail perfectly, they can even annoyingly move out of position due to gravity. I still think it is a more efficient system in terms of space-savings than the other options. Seems to me like the hinge rack thing requires more space?

yeah, part of the issue is that we’ve got A LOT of wide bar bikes that are going to run into each other. with hooks, i’ve historically alternated front wheel/rear wheel hanging to fix that issue, but it’s kind of annoying to hang up a heavy mtb by it’s rear wheel.

this is the collection of bikes we’re trying to stow:

  1. emtb: my trance e-bike
  2. mtb; sup’s alloy status that is like 35+ lbs
  3. mtb: my hd6
  4. mtb: my ripmo
  5. mtb: my marin hardtail
  6. mtb: sup’s 26er kona
  7. mtb: my dirt jumper - not usually at home so doesnt really matter
  8. gravel: my giant revolt
  9. road: sup’s flat bar serrotta
  10. road: my flat bar fuso
  11. bmx: sup’s bmx

this system looks like it kinda holds the bikes at an angle to eliminate the handlebar overlap issue

Seems like you just turn the problem 45 degrees? And you still need front to back space to unrack?

I’ve seen some shops store their bikes with the bars rotated 90° from normal (in line with the front wheel) to get around the handlebar issue. I’m not quite to that point, but it may be soon.

moving the bars 45 deg very much changes how close together two bikes can be placed with riser bars.

front to back space isn’t an issue. it’s a 2-car garage and we don’t need to park in it, though maybe we will occasionally want to in case of snow.

ease of removing and rehanging bikes is my primary concern and i’ve had several storage situations that were not very easy, i.e. certain bikes only fit in certain spots or bikes had to be hung in a specific order, pedals were always getting caught on each other, etc.

Seems like this might be just what you need then

Seems like every 5 years I pop in here with the same question… I need help building up a new bike touring rig! Now that I’m not sponsored anymore, I can ride any bike I want again and kind of want a new frame. Curious what’s been catching folks eyes lately…

Intended Use:

-Bike touring & bike packing. I like panniers (and most bikes in my size are too small for effectively carrying frame/saddle bags), so will likely be using a front rack of some sort.

Recommendations?

I’m only half joking.

serious answer is the kona unit x. 12sp deore and mtb wheels

I’m too fat for that bike.

RIDER WEIGHT LIMIT?: It’s hard to say, it depends so much on what else you’re carrying, the surface you’re on, the tire volume and pressure…lots of things that are just hard to pin down. But we’ll say…220lb. But if you weigh that, don’t also load the bike up with touring gear.”

Ooh that’s pretty. I test rode that one at MADE this year if I remember correctly. Think @igor has any hidden inventory?

oh damn. well the unit x is probably pretty good.

I just ordered a unit x frame and will build it this week. Looks sweet. The bronze color is cool. Will report on the vibes. Really wish it had a front rack brazeon separate from the 3 pack

Ever watch Slow Spokes?

She’s tiny, and has had problems finding a bike that fits. She finally got a Panorama Boreal. Maybe worth a look?
