Shit. Todd told me about this yesterday and I was barely listening. That looks so bad.

TBH that sounds like a career ender

I think you’re right. Forget riding a bike with the injuries he’s sustained it’s going to be a long road to recovery.

An open femoral fracture is real fucked and a major injury to recover from. Its a wonder he didn’t have a (reported) head injury with a crash that severe

Sup pointed this out to me yesterday, seriously tough for the man.

This is by no means an attempt to make light of the very severe injuries he did sustain, but if he did escape without a TBI then it’s a huge blessing. The minor TBI I had after my big crash 7 years ago was the most difficult thing I’ve had to go through, and even that was fairly light compared to some of the stuff these folks endure. I hope the guy can make a full and fast recovery.

Met my buddy Suse yesterday. She is recovering from a “concussion” she got 2 weeks ago after falling off a bridge on her bike. She is a co-leader of a 12 million $ project with my work and is currently struggling to work past 2:30pm. She is such an amazing woman as an athlete and scientist. Diminished capability must be uber hard for the over-achievers out there. I really hope she doesn’t get the depression part of it.

Dr Tom Jerram, who prescribed the drug to help boost the effects of antibiotics, described the wound as “life or limb threatening”. Both Martin and his team manager Mark Maurissen inquired if the drug was banned but there was apparently no phone signal to check.
As the Probenecid was prescribed by a trained doctor, the GT team applied to the UCI for a TUE (Theraputic Use Exemption), which allows athletes to take prohibited substances without punishment if they have a medical need. The UCI denied this request on June 1, after the failed tests, but they did accept that the drug would not have enhanced his performance and was administered by a doctor so handed down a more lenient punishment than the maximum possible two year ban.

It sounds like he was in a pretty gnarly situation and possibly in danger of loosing his leg… Not making excuses but just putting this out there as well.

I clipped my pedal on the first day of the NZ Enduro, which resulted in a cut. It was pouring down that day so I kept racing and I guess it got infected so I got in touch with Dr Jerram after the first day of racing. He cleaned the wound as well as he could, put in three or four stitches that day and gave me a small dose of antibiotics to help fight the infection.

48 hours later, on Sunday, I woke up and I got to a point where I couldn’t even walk any more with my leg. The wound was surrounded with a lot of red, it wasn’t normal and wasn’t getting better. I decided to go back to the event and see Dr Jerram again and he was pretty stoked that I went back to him and showed him the infection because it was getting worse by the hour.

Dr. Jerram said it was a potential loss of limb situation and you had to take it for your own safety. Did you realise it was that serious at the time?

Martin: Yeah we realised. We got to the point where I couldn’t put my leg on the floor and I couldn’t feel my leg anymore. It was getting worse and worse and my body temperature was getting higher and higher and I knew it wasn’t going a good way. The doctor had to do something and I was actually happy, he saved my leg and 24 to 36 hours after I could use it again.

It sucks that they had to suspend him but I wish shit like this could be a wake up call for those shitheads out there that dope. This dude could have lost his leg and luckily he didn’t try to tough it out for fear of using a banned substance. People doping and getting legitimate drugs banned are putting others in danger.

It’s still pretty fucking sad that in this situation they still felt the need to suspend him and strip his win.

Yeah, I think it fucking sucks for him. He crushed those two EWS wins, and the third for that matter. So many stage wins, queen stage bonus points, and overall.

Damn, Richie Rude came back hard. 4 of 5 stage wins.

crash .8mi to go made the finish a bit erratic. Sagan getting sniped on the final sprint was kinda disappointing

really missing Paul Sherwen too

I will be. Rouleur Derby has me addicted

I was kind of shocked to see that Cavendish isn’t riding this year.
We are headed to France on Monday. Going to watch the start in Mulhouse in person.

This is a pretty sweet move:

But looks at that guy’s head bounce off the pavement. :grimacing:
