Road Bikes That Handle Like a Fucking Dream AKA This Thread Is Going Downhill Fast

^ there’s a reason why only triathletes ride gurus

have you ridden one? i’m getting one this year.

also, to answer the op:

it’s no secret that the apogee for road bike geometry was in the early 70’s

Road bikes I have most enjoyed riding to date:

  • Box Dog Pelican (62cm)
  • Surly Cross-Check (60cm)
  • '02 Lemond Zurich (61cm)

All of these bikes are stable, predictable, corner and descend well, and provide a comfortable ride. The Pelican has the best handling IMHO, it’s very neutral but really rails a corner unlike anything I’ve ridden so far. The Lemond was the most twitchy (only in a relative sense - it’s an extremely stable bike), and the Cross-Check the most stable, I guess the Pelican is sort of the Goldilocks in the middle. Also, I really like the feel of the Pelican’s standard (as opposed to oversize) tubing, I think it gives it a nicer, more lively feeling that the Cross-Check sort of lacked by comparison. The 853 on the Lemond is also nice, but the Pelican is nicer still even though it’s just 4130.

Least enjoyed road bike:

  • '08 Giant TCR C3 (Large)

OK on the flats but a nervous twitchfest on descents. Never got to a warm fuzzy place with it, and in fact started to like it less and less the longer I rode it. I think I would’ve liked the next size up better, but the shop I got it from insisted they’d fit me correctly. I sold the bike and have not missed it at all.

I rode one that was a tad small for me but I have to point out that Gios Compacts are pretty highly praised frames. However they’re pretty aggressive and crit-like. But damn they climb like a goat and descend like a penguin(?).

My Look 555 has been nothing short of phenomenal and makes me love it the more I ride it.

I thought he stopped making Skeletors and has a new design now?

oh man. so, so jelouse

pegorettis seem incredible…

My T-Mobile Giant is pretty good all round, for crabon, size is L. The nicest though is the early 80’s De Rosa. It is very stiff so can be a little unforgiving on bumpy roads but it holds a line really well and never feels twitchy. It’s a 56 square iirc and is made of Columbus SLX. As for bikes I don’t own but have test ridden, the Look 595 was pretty awesome, very stable.

my leopard dc1 is the best handling bike i’ve owned. its fast, climbs up hills easily, and can take very aggressive lines at high speeds with no problem. my only complaint is that its too stiff and in rough sections i find my ass getting rattled as i feel every crack, pebble, and imperfection in the road. great race bike, not so great bike for a sunday ride.
