Say it ain't so: The Assploded Bike Parts Picture Thread.

Hmmm maybe uninstall and look for damage and reinstall and see if they sit further outboard.

I did take them off, clean, put some light grease on and put back on with proper torques. I think that maybe I can install the Shimano bb a hair further to the DS but maybe that is a ridiculous notion.

I was always a dry square taper spindle guy myself, greased the crank bolt threads tho.

If it was a little loose for a while and then ridden on for a while then you made have inadvertently permanently stretched the crank open such that now tightening it (with the aid of some lube as well) it goes farther onto the spindle than you would desire

you might be lucky and it stays together, but frequently the crank will continue to come loose and you’ll crank it down more and it’ll come loose until you replace the sucker

you could try spacing the BB over to the drive side

or you could try replacing with a longer spindle

or the most robust solution is cronk replacer

Maybe now is the time to put this titanium white bb back in and see if I get my fraction of an mm back.

Uh, just as soon as I remember where the bearings go.

Which should I use on my mtb and which should I use on this dead ender project?

an intern from the local bike coop had the best phrase in the world. “a millimeter of an inch” i took it to mean a really tiny thing smaller than an already not so big thing. love it.

the trick is to never ever “tighten” a square taper crank bolt

completely remove and reinstall the crankarm if you’re going to touch it

even on a safely installed crank, after a while of being ridden you can usually get another half-turn in before the bolt is back up to its original torque — and doing this really hogs out its butthole

Pleased to find out why my Powertap harness wasn’t working. Pissed that despite being really careful it was my loading of it on the bike rack that screwed it.

That’ll buff right out.

Yeah. Spliced it back together. Hopefully it will be alright. Not pretty.
