Yeowch.
TC: have done the same, with that same damage.
dude seems fine which is nice but gotdam
I was following two friends who were riding side by side. One went left, one went right, and the bollard snapped into existence right in front of me.
Borked the frame and fork, the wheel and I were fine.
Probably lucky I didn’t see it or I would have tried to swerve and smashed my kneekcap or foot.
I did that to my beloved schwinn le tour by drunkenly crashing into the back of a taxi cab.
Every time I wish Flexposts inflicted some actual damage to automobiles, I always consider what that would mean for me on my bike!
your mans is on reddit trying to get people to agree that heat treated chromoly should not have “snapped like that” and has apparently emailed crust asking them to send him the “material lot number” of the tubing used.
(glad he didn’t get hurt though, bollards are sketch)
That’s hilarious
You should tell your mans to stop crying and to suck it up and get a new frame (and don’t crash next time)
lmfao really?
i mean he is definitely pissed but like, bollard.
edit: pls send thread i just have to know
It’s called a heat certificate and also LOL.
Edit, read the thread
If I had to guess thin wall modern cr-no tubing should have like 50-100ft-lbs toughness at ambient temp, which is good, bad is like 10-15lbs for old junk carbon steels
Lol #2. Is the friend suggesting the material was below the ductile to brittle transition temperature?
That thread
Oh man. At least most of the commenters are telling the guy that frames always fail that way.
My favorite:
Isn’t it likely that Crust and BM frames are made in the same factory?
You had me at “I’m just learning about this stuff, so all I can give is a semi-informed wild ass guess”
“I haven’t the first clue what I’m talking about so here’s me talking out of my ass”
Amazing. He should be forced to ride some Walmart shit with gas pipe tubes.
Worst crash I had on my green Rick Jones was being led around Joaquin Miller in Oakland. We were bombing down some trail, came out of the bushes and encountered like a 3 foot drop onto a paved path around a corner. I didn’t quite pull up enough and went OTB nose diving out of the bushes in full view of a bunch of children screaming around a playground. Thought for sure the bike was toast but there wasn’t a damn scratch on it. Guess Rick knew a thing or two about ALLOYS.
.
Glad the dudes ok but as the saying goes, “sucks to suck”
That reddit thread showcases the qualities I hate most in bike people
At least he admits it, on reddit. A place filled with confidently incorrect 20.5 year olds.
“the nicest of the damned”
A rider hit a bollard on my rando clubs populaire a few years ago. They got hurt and tried to sue everyone… The city, the other riders in their group and finally our club. We won but it was expensive. Now we have better waivers.
All that said. Bollards are dangerous and roadie hazard pointing is an unintuitive practice that kinda looks silly. It sort of points to the general fact that bike infrastructure is shitty and requires excessively special skills to get through safely. Im glad you didn’t get hurt.
My buddy always blames me for him hitting a bollard on his Singular Gryphon. Folded the fork but the frame was still mint. I don’t think the tubing is anything flash. Worst bollard story was Aussie aero/power coach, Alex Simmons who hit a bollard on his commute. Shattered his lower leg, got compartment syndrome, lost his lower leg. Sued for a big number and won.
