Skip to page 83 and get going. Every time.

I had a friend I wanted to teach me to build wheels. She just said ‘No. Here’s the book, just follow the directions.’ She was right.

i’ve used all the books and the brandt method is the one that always works best for me.

I was hoping somebody would link this, thank you!!

Thanks, I can’t find my copy!

A perennial bathroom book.

I built a wheel once and that was enough, zero interest in trying that again

For newbies I find the Roger Musson ebook makes it easy to digest the theory of wheelbuilding, and the instructions are very easy to follow.

Ryde Andra 30 is a good 559 option too

This happened awhile ago but I haven’t been able to think about it until recently. Patient is a Fairlight Secan 2.5. Seat post clamp spec from Fairlight is 29.8 or a 30.0, so I buy a King clamp (foreshadowing) which comes in 30.0. I always use a Ritchey torque key, and just turn down until it clicks like always, not thinking that hard about it. Later on when making other adjustments I see this:

Upon loosening and torquing it again, I realize that it takes way longer to get the torque click from the wrench. I double check this with my nice torque wrench and it does the same thing. On things like stem bolts, both wrenches perform as expected (fewer turns to click compared to the post clamp). So I make a beer can shim for the clamp, but both wrenches still sail past what should trip them at 5nm.

What do?

toss the king clamp off a bridge

acquire other 29.8 clamp

Hard disagree. Ryde Andra 30 is the worst rim I’ve ever used. The poorly pinned joint was like 2mm out of alignment and there was a big lip. Plus it was so out of true and round that I could never get it right.

The straw that broke the camel’s back though was a bit of metal in the rim that made a ton of noise while riding.

I can’t quite see what’s happening. Is the clamp pinching the seatpost?

I’m vouldn be in a similar scenario. I just got a Fairlight and it came with the Fairlight spec seatpost clamp. But I wanted to match the headset so I also bought a king clamp. Haven’t installed it yet and now I’m feeling like I just threw away $50.

The seatpost is compressing(read cracking) and therfore undersized, requiring the bolt to tighten further than it should to reach 5nm. That seatpost is toast. Try a measured 27.2 alloy post and see what happens.

I wonder if it was a QC miss or had some damage in shipping? The Andras I’ve built have been solid. Haven’t used one in a while though, Cliffhangers have been more popular lately which I find worse to build with.

Could be. I have a second rim, maybe I should do a swap. I wonder if I took that wheel apart yet.

The cliffhanger I had built up really nice but only lasted for a few moths of daily cargo bike use.

Pulled my track bike down for the first time in prolly 8 years and found

Still gonna ride it

Loose end cap plug?

That’s the theory. Can’t feel any movement when I flex the frame in different ways so not really worried
