Rim is definitely worse than I thought.
That being said, if the tape was a few mm wider and overlapped where the bead of the tire seats it likely would have held pressure though.
Next go round, run a tad wider tape so it’s at least a mm or two up the inner side wall of the rim. I tape everything this way, especially because it seems like at least 75% of the wheels we see are pinned and have a gap that will leak if too narrow tape is used.
The 370 upgrade is great, but requires two different drive ring removal tools, and the required parts are costly (unless you already have a driver and some star ratchets kicking around). It’s a great option for when the pawl driver blows up.
We’ve been doing a few on new bikes, where the down-spec to 370 was one of the cost cutting measures on an otherwise nicely spec’d bike. Not much additional cost in the whole scheme of a new MTB to bring the hub up to level.
@plop or @frank_doktor y’all know if the 240/350/440 share not only the same star-ratchet kit but also all the other internals necessary for conversion?
New internals:
240 Ring Nut M34x1mm : 7613052165578
240s Shim Ring: 7613052115252
240 Aluminum Bushing: 840121029814
They have to share the ring nut, because then the star ratchet wouldn’t engage, but I wonder about the shim ring and the bushing.
If the wheel is used, you’ll likely need to add an impact wrench and a DT tool modded to fit in one. You might luck out. But the ratchet ring is usually absurdly tight in there.
I love that in the video dude acts like it’s barely hand tight in there.
