Ok, let’s eliminate two lanes on Market St., slow down traffic to 30 mph, double the number of pedestrian crosswalks, and build a dedicated protected bike lane from there to the locks.
Or, you know, we can reuse the abandoned, rutted out railroad track on Shilshole.
Yeah. Shilshole went from a sleepy street that a few industrial businesses could treat as an extension of their property to a busy one because the city is growing.

Wief wants to visit vashon island Or somewhere beautiful and up in that neighborhood. Only hitch is we’re bringing our dog. Anybody have a recommendation of a hotel/rental? Is hiking a thing?[/quote]
I don’t think there’s a whole lot going on on Vashon Island. There’s some great hilly road bike riding and some beginner/intermediate level MTB trails. You can find some easy hiking in Island Center Forest. Snapdragon Bakery is pretty good.
The Hardware Store (a restaurant) has really good breakfast and lunch. There are some good bookstores and home goods shops. As mentioned above, Vashon is great for hilly road rides, I wasn’t familiar with their MTB trails.
The people out there are generally pretty laid back. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that they had some great bed and breakfasts out there.
Port Townsend is way better than vashon. Whidbey is okay as long as you stay on the south side of the island. Oak harbor is a cancer boil on the island. Coupville is nice.
Bring a rain coat. But surprisingly, hiking in the rain out here in November can be kind of nice. The forests are pretty dense so if you stay at low enough elevation where the snow isn’t flying yet, you won’t get too wet. From Port Townsend, you can take a decent day drive out to the Olympic National Park for a day hike.
And if you get tired of the rain you can go to sequim and the other areas in the rain shadow of the Olympics. PT/Sequim/PA is about as good as it gets in the PNW in November.
Got a small mountain bike or CX bike that you can loan out for a day? The Washington Women of CX festival is coming up on 8/26 and I’m working with one of the local teams to try and get more women to (myself included) out for the beginner clinics and race that day. The idea is to get a few small bikes for people to try out CX, see if they like it in a friendly, supportive atmosphere, and then they can go buy a bike that they actually like.
If you’ve got one that would fit the bill (the course is at St. Eds), let me know and I can play match-maker. There’s also a men’s and kids race. https://www.usacycling.org/register/2017-2030
