Surprised to see glove chat in tarckives and no newer threads.
I would like to chat about gloves.
I love gloves, but have only recently seen the light of full fingers. I think they are the way all the time. Used to rock lots of different cutoff ones, mostly Pearl Izumi, but it’s nice to have the whole fingers covered consistently.
So far I have tried Saints of Speed and O’Neal Mayhem gloves and like them both, but prefer SOS slightly.
I’ve also ridden in Ironclad Heavy Utility and Cowboy models, and I know a lot of people like the Mechanix gloves but I’m an Ironclad fanboy. I’ve had some and they’re great, I just always get ironclads for work gloves.
I really want to try some offerings from Fox and Cinelli.
I have been wearing Giro DnDs for commuting/townie biking for a while. They are very durable but once they wear in a little the fingertips aren’t great with Shimano shakes, I feel like they get caught between the levers
I guess I should offer a point of comparison. I’ve also gone through some Handup gloves and the graphics can be cool but the durability is greatly lacking compared to DnDs. I have to very consciously toss DnDs after they become sort of flappy and sunbleached but they remain functional for a long time. Every Handup glove I’ve had has a seam or the palm fail before they get bleached.
are my favorite gloves ever for cool/cold stuff. I wear them biking down to upper 30s. I run in them into the low 30s. I also wear them on mountaineering shit. Great on snow.
I basically don’t ride bikes anymore that require gloves, except for commuting when it’s cold and or wet. Bought a set of those knit Cross Point gloves last year and they’ve not given me much of it yet, but I’ll try them again this fall.
I would say I get 2-3 seasons out of them easily. But i also currently have a lot of other pairs in the rotation because i always ride in full finger gloves and i dont like them to be sweaty/stiff/stinky.
Giro rodeo: These are comfortable, but run a lot bigger than the DNDs and thus feel a bit looser. Can’t speak to their durability because i just got them early this year.
Giro Havoc: I like these, but they started to get a hole in the mesh after a couple years. Now they’re finally largely unusable because one finger pokes out. But the mesh is nice for breathability .
Giro Xnetic: This are more durable than the havoc. The palms show some wear, but overall they’re still fine, but i would say i’ve worn them slightly less than others just as they kinda got lost in the drawer last year. Have had for at least 3 years.
Fasthouse blitz: These are very snug, but they fit super nice. I just inherited them as extras when i lost my fox work uniform gloves and really like these, but can’t speak to their durability.
Fox ranger: These on paper are the type of glove i like, basic suede palm, stretchy rear, not too thin, not too thick, but the velcro ruins it. I got maybe 6 weeks of use out of them before the velcro started constantly coming unstuck. I still have them as back ups because the rest of the glove is in good shape, but fuck a velcro strap. They are also always getting stuck on stuff in the wash.
tldr is that i’m with @Dr_Jart_Attack_PhD - the giro DND is hard to beat on simplicity and durability.
My winter glove requirements aren’t super strong here in TX but I keep buying DeFeet Duragloves. They kinda suck and fit weird but I guess I keep buying them because they are slightly warmer than summer gloves but don’t get weird and sweaty like real winter gloves always seem to. I guess want something that’s similar but warmer and with a better fit. I was hoping that the DnD wool gloves would be the answer but they are are lighter and flimsier. I am extremely open to suggestion on a breathable glove that can keep your hands warm at like 45F.
Actually looks like Todd might have posted an option hmmm
My current favourite winter gloves are from Aldi: non-bike ones, just regular old thermal waterproof-ish jobbers. Keep my hands nice and warm on my 0-10c winter rides. I have a bunch of other full-finger gloves that are pretty much just whatever was on sale when I needed some. My local $2 shop has good woolen ones in bright orange that are pretty good. I also have some cycling-specific GripGrab ones which are pretty good, but what makes them cycling-specific is unclear.
I used to have these awesome GripGrab knit ones that were absolutely perfect. All 3 pairs somehow got thrown out in a room rearranging mixup, and they are no longer being made…. Very distressing.
