I would give it a shot w/o sealant first to see if the beads will seat. If not, another layer of tape won’t hurt.
I’ve been thinking about how tubeless tires often need to get a bit of sealant spread around the inner surface of the tire to seal teeny holes and whatnot.
This is why you’re supposed to lay the tire on its side for a few minutes and then flip it over, in addtion to giving a few good spins/ ride around the block.
So:
would it help tubeless tires work well if you painted the inside of your tires with sealant before mounting them, and gave them time to dry to a tacky finish? Does the sealing have to happen at pressure? Would getting a base layer of sealant on there be of any use?
I sort of hope that the answer is no, that the industry is going to keep refining road tubeless so that this stuff isn’t a problem, but if not, I guess we’ll all have to get as weird with tubeless as preceding generations were with tubulars.
Absolutely want your tires to have a nice snug fit. Tape it till you make it.
The DT R460 wheelset I used to have would seat Gatorskins with a floor pump. I’ve had a couple Re Fuse not want to seat on my db460 wheels, but they went on with the air compressor.
Yea, I know. I’ll burn that bridge when I get to it.
I’ve used that exact combo with no trouble at all. I second more tape. Always more tape.
Whatever “standard” DT uses doesn’t really hold onto the bead of most tires all that well in my experience.
Fine if you ride enough to keep them pumped. Exceedingly frustrating if you don’t.
thanks all for the input. With four wraps, both beads seat reliably. But it seems like it will be fiddly to seat without tube because it’s floppy in the center channel, so maybe I’ll unwrap & try a layer of gorilla tape in the middle…
Should I just replace the worn out byways with more byways?
Is there actually anything better for mixed terrain riding in 650x47?
We just tried out those teravail ramparts and mrs. biek HATED them.
also in the Ramparts are ‘meh’ club.
I may go back to Byways if I’m not smart enough to avoid Switchbacks too tempted by the supple lyfe
Ultradynamico tires ride really nicely. Have them on my Polyvalent and Adrian’s Pass Hunter. Though $$
And the Cava is in a 700c sizeway now.
I need to decide if I want to ball hard or just go with the new Hutchinson.
I was under the impression those were meme tires?
Simworks worth considering or just skip?
What are all y’all not liking about the Ramparts?
I haven’t tried them personally, but I might throw them on just to test her concerns. She told me that:
They don’t have anywhere near as much grip as the byways do on gravel, they are not as fast as the byways on pavement, and they were extremely picky about inflation pressures.
Also she seems to be running the byways at 20psi lower than the ramparts in all situations and getting better results.
That being said, I had to actually put work in to get them to stand up on a wall, and even then they want to fold up:
The ramparts are kinda shitty. Supple sidewall but super stiff tread is huh??? Tread pattern also seems to throw sand and grit directly into the drivetrain. UD tires aren’t as nice as byways either, I tried both the rose and cava race and they’re just ok, I’d be pissed if I paid retail for them. WTB is really the best price/ride quality option.
Wish for thunderburts in 1.85 tho.
Interesting, these sound like the same sort of complaints I have about the Horizons.
Yeah, horizons have zero grip in wet dirt
Pretty ok with ‘em otherwise
feel fast enough for me, a fatdad
This is good news. Took mine for their first short spin last night, felt pretty good on the road and very nice on a dirt trail. So much cush.
