Far and away the most random one I found. Serfas makes a 650b gravel tire? And it’s 650bx42? I figured it was some sort of development for OEM sales that didn’t take off.

also christ mega facepalm at that tire being called 2.0" wide (50.8mm, ~51mm), and 47mm wide (1.85"), and 50mm wide (~1.95") all at the same time.
Adem knows everything about space and ETRO
What was it we were making fun of Jan for, like something easily measurable like tire width or somethinf
i think how to measure width?
He’s a tremendous resource. I can’t get enough of that encyclopedic knowledge. Between him and @JUGE_FREDD the coverage is astounding.
2 + 2 = 5 for large values of 2
Wasn’t it Specialized that tried labeling their tires things like 700x25/28c, to try an indicate that the tread itself was 25 wide, but the casing was larger like a 28?
Yeah. WTB tried something similar.
I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a push to note what width rim a tire is measured on. 700x28(i19) for example. Or god forbid we just ditch made up numbers and go with things like 622x28(i19) and call it a day.
It would also be a great way for tire makers to note what they consider optimal rim width.
Hold on, how are we supposed to tell 650a tires from 650c tires?
The Roubaix Pro is labeled 30/32.
this would be interesting but yeah if we’re gonna make a new tire notation system let’s PLEASE base it off the actual rim diameter like ETRTO, not an imagined outer diameter that’s either vaguely related to century+ old french sizing nomenclature or made-up-by-marketing inch sizes.
ERTRO 2020 standards now are supposed to require using a given reference rim width:
Tyre section | Measuring rim width (mm) |
---|---|
18-21 | 15C |
22-24 | 17C |
25-28 | 19C |
29-34 | 21C |
35-46 | 23 |
47-57 | 25 |
58-65 | 30 |
66-71 | 35 |
72-83 | 45 |
84-113 | 76 |
114-132 | 94 |
uuuuuggghhh i am realizing that the euros (michelin, schwalbe, etc) like marking their tires as 650x25A, where:
- “650” is the historical-french-approximate-outer-diameter-in-mm
- “25” is the actual tire width in mm (never mind that a 650A would historically be a ~35-37mm tire, so a 650A-sized, 25mm wide tire will be noticeably less than 650mm in diameter)
- and “A” indicating that it fits on a 650A-sized rim, AKA 590mm bead seat diameter
If the letter at the end is supposed to be part of the rim size indication (rather than a historical curiosity from the 1970s indicating the need for a hooked rim), then “650x47C” - like everyone sells nowadays - implies that it’s for a 650C/571mm BSD rim, not a 650B/584mm BSD rim. This is clearly not the case, and yet…
TL;DR everything sucks, even the tire makers don’t understand why they put the markings on the sides of their tires, we should all use ETRTO like St. Sheldon evangelized.
turns out undiagnosed probably ADHD is good for something: hyper-fixating on the bastardization of french tire sizing systems when i should be working
I like using mm for tyre widths. Like 650b/47mm, or 700c/28mm.
I had no idea about the “c” meaning crochet rims. Seems kinda redundant tbqhwy.
I was just “pod-listening” to this very same thing. It also seems that ADHD kids can have no probs focussing at all if there is significant incentive or THREAT. Back in the olden days that meant “the bash” ( my theory ) so maybe this is one of the reasons why more kids are being diagnosed, cos we can’t beat them up anymore?

On a more directly tire related note, I’ve been putting up with this ridiculous “squidge, squidge, squidge” noise eminating from my riding buddy’s Juniper Ridge tire, from almost new. Our LBS discovered that “squealant” was leaking in between the casing and the tread, causing the noise. I guess he can use it minus the noise with a tube.
Exact opposite of Jan’s patented noise cancellation technology
